Nico Felicien Declercq (Kortrijk (Belgium), 27 December 1975) is a physicist and mechanical engineer. He is a professor [9] with the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and Georgia Tech Europe in France. He is specialized in ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of materials, propagation of ultrasonic waves in highly complex materials, in acoustics, in theoretical and experimental linear and nonlinear ultrasonics, acousto-optics, Medical Physics and Acoustic Microscopy. He has investigated the acoustics of Chichen Itza and Epidaurus. [10] He published over 100 works in scientific journals. As a Ph.D. student (September 5, 2001 - May 12, 2005), Declercq published 30 peer-reviewed articles in reputed scientific journals, including Annalen der Physik, and made 42 presentations (with papers in proceedings) at international congresses in his field. His work was highlighted in Nature News, [11] [12] New Scientist, [13] USA Today, [14] The Economist, [15] The Washington Post, [16] Die Zeit, [17] and Acoustics Today. [18]

Education, career and awards

Declercq received his BSc and MSc in physics (with a major in astrophysics) from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1996 and 2000, respectively, and received a PhD in engineering physics from Ghent University in 2005. He worked as a Belgian National Science Foundation (FWO Vlaanderen) postdoctoral fellow with Ghent University and has been a visiting scientist, supported by NATO, at the National Center for Physical Acoustics at the University of Mississippi, before joining Georgia Tech in 2006.

Declercq received the International Dennis Gabor Award from the NOVOFER Foundation of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on December 21, 2006. He received the ICA Early Career Award "For outstanding contributions to ultrasonics, particularly for studies of propagation and diffraction of acoustic waves" from the International Commission for Acoustics in 2007. [19]

Declercq has been president (2013-2015) of the steering board of the International Congress on Ultrasonics, [20] as well as president of their 2015 congress. [21] He is an associate editor of the journal Acta Acustica united with Acustica, [22] associate editor of the Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation, [23] and founding editor-in-chief of Elsevier's Physics in Medicine. [24] He serves on technical committees of the French Acoustical Society and is the Chair of the Ultrasonics Technical Committee of the European Acoustics Association. [25] As Georgia Tech Professor, Declercq has received several Teaching Excellence Awards. [26] In addition to his tenure as a full professor at Georgia Tech, he serves in a courtesy role as a full professor in the Doctoral School of the University of Lorraine in France. [27]

Connections with the Indian sub-continent

In India, Declercq is a respected scientist. Given his background in astrophysics, acoustics, and acousto-optics, he was honored, in 2019, to inaugurate the Aryabhatt Auditorium. [28] The auditorium is named after Indias mathematician-astronomer Aryabhatt. It belongs to the "Prof. Rajendra Singh (Rajju Bhaiya) Institute of Physical Sciences for Study and Research" [29] at the VBSPU University [30] at Jaunpur, which is named after Rajju Bhaiya, a pupil of Nobel Prize laureate C.V. Raman. In 2008 Declercq wrote a book on ultrasonics, together with his Indian colleagues P.C. Mishra, Rajendra Kumar Singh, and Sri Singh. [31] In Sri Lanka, a country which he visits regularly, he has family bonds and is a frequently invited speaker at the nation’s institutes of higher education. He is also known as a scholar of the history of India and Sri Lanka. [32] In 2022, he was named Physics Professor Honoris Causa [33] [34] [35] at the University of Allahabad, India. Declercq was the chief guest at Bundelkhand University in Jhansi in 2023 for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Ultrasonics Society of India. [36]

Origin: The coat of arms contains colours and elements referring to that of Declercq’s ancestors de Patin (a Flemish family originating in the 14th century in Cambrai, France [40] ), with shield placed in front of the original shield (in catalan: Cortado Jaquelado de oro y azur, 2º, de azur, dos palos de oro) of his Spanish paternal ancestors Desclergues (originating in the 16th century in Catalunya, Spain). [41]

Declercq is a patrilineal descendant of Don Pere Desclergue (I), who was born early in the 15th century AD [42] [43] [44] at Montblanc in the Conca de Barberà in Catalunya, Spain. Pere Desclergue's grandson Bonaventura Desclergue (II) i Cortés, a notary at Montblanc, had four sons, one of which would stay as heir at Montblanc, while the three others (Jeroni, Antoni (I) and Enric) would go to Flanders as military during the Eighty-year war. [45] Don Jeroni Desclergue [45] [46] had been a military since 1587. [45] He stayed in Flanders from 1587-1598 and 1601-1604. In 1587, he became a commander in the infantry company of Lluís de Queralt (a Catalan); while in Flanders he joined the company of Diego de Durango, in the tercio of Luis del Villar. [47] It has been reported [45] that he was involved in military interventions in Holland, Flanders and France, including the Siege of Cambrai of 1595. [48] On March 10 of 1597 he captured, with his company, the city of Amiens and helped further defending it against the French. On January 14 of 1598 he was recognized for his military career by his captain Diego de Durango. [45] Once returned to Barcelona, he went to the service of the Viceroy Duke of Feria. His stay in Barcelona allowed him to attend, with his father Bonaventura Desclergue (II) and his elder brother Francesc Desclergue, in the Cortes of Barcelona of 1599. [49] In 1602 he returned to Flanders in August, where he commanded as Tercio captain of a company of Iñigo de Borja, with which he participated in the Siege of Ostend (August 1601 - September 27 of 1604), where he died, with half of his company, while leading an assault, as a result of the explosion of a mine, on 4 September of 1604, which also wounded his brother Enric Desclergue. [45] Enric was awarded for his military achievements and died in 1631. [45] Antoni appeared in contemporary literature [50] which shows that he went back and forth to Spain, while Jeroni’s grandson, Antoni, was the continuator of the Desclergue bloodline in Flanders through his marriage, in Flanders, with Martina de la Cruz in 1656. [2] Bonaventura Desclergues (II) [42] is the one who established the monumental 'Casal dels Desclergue’, or ’la Casa Desclergues’ [51] on the Plaza Mayor of Montblanc; Nico Declercq stems from Jeroni Desclergue twelve generations later. [2] [52] DNA analysis shows that the Desclergues of Montblanc originate from Bertrand du Guesclin, [53] [44] : 97–130  who was a military commander from Brittany and who supported Henry of Trastámara, the first King of Castile and León in the period 1365-1370.

Ernest Constant Declercq (1872-1947) [44] : 463–526  is the great-grandfather of Nico F. Declercq. On his mother's side, Declercq is blood-related to Marc Waelkens (1948-2021) [44] : 981  and Tom Van Flandern (1940-2009), [44] : 989–1009  while, on his paternal grandmother's side, to Charles-Philippe de Patin (1687-1773) [44] : 1047–1063  and, through both paternal grandparents, to Peter Benoit (1834-1901). In recognition of his contribution to the field of acoustics, he was awarded the Tyndall Medal by the Institute of Acoustics in 2006. He was elected a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America in 2014 and fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2020.

Mack Alfred Breazeale was an American physicist particularly known for his work in ultrasonics and physical acoustics. Breazeale is widely regarded as one of the leading acousticians of the 20th century, highly accomplished in both theory and experiment. When he died, he was a retired distinguished research professor and senior scientist at the National Center for Physical Acoustics at the University of Mississippi. Born in Leona Mines, Virginia, Breazeale grew up near Crossville, TN. Educated at Berea College, the Missouri School of Mines, and the Michigan State University, he was a tireless researcher and trained many others in the field of physics. Before his appointment at the National Center for Physical Acoustics, he was professor of physics at the University of Tennessee (1962-1995) and at Michigan State University (1957-1962). A longtime editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, he was a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and received its Silver Medal in 1988. He was a fellow of the Institute of electrical and Electronics Engineers and Great Britain's Institute of Acoustics, and had been a Fulbright Research Fellow in Stuttgart, Germany early in his career.

Trained in physics and theoretical physics, he works across physical, medical, biological, social and ocean sciences, fluid dynamics and engineering. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Gabriëlle Demedts</span> Flemish Belgian poet

Gabriëlle Demedts was a Flemish Belgian poet. She was a sibling of André Demedts. In 1934 she wrote her first poems and in 1937 she published her first work "Een gevangene zingt". As a young child she was struck by Poliomyelitis which has determined the rest of her life. In a book about the Declercq family, one can read that some of Demedts’ poems have been inspired by life-changing events in her life and that of the Declercqs. She wrote, for instance, '’Rustig lied’' and '’Lage tonen'’ after a love break-up of her friend Valentine Declercq, or '’Zomer’' (Summer) when Valentine was severely ill and dying. Later, she also wrote a poem, '’Ik heb gedaan...'’, when Ernest Constant Declercq, Valentine’s father and a close friend of Gabrielle Demedts’ parents, had died.

Vikram Kumar is an Indian material physicist, academic and an emeritus fellow of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He is a former director of the Sold State Physics Laboratory of IIT Delhi and is known for his studies on semiconductor technology. He has worked on ultra thin oxide MOS structures, silicon, III-V and II—VI semiconductors which is reported to have assisted in understanding their characterization. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 1992. He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Materials Scientist of the Year award of the Materials Research Society of India. The Dutch and Flemish authors' banquet, was a literary event on August 26, 1933, held at Deerlijk in Belgium, attended by the prominent writers in Belgium and the Netherlands of that era. It was held on the same day as a celebration of the anniversary of the Association of Large and Young Families of Deerlijk. The photo of the event is memorable because it shows an entire generation of Dutch and Flemish writers in one frame. Willem Elsschot met Jan Greshoff at the event, who convinced him to go back to writing, and the album 'Kaas' resulted. Born 1687, in Ypres, he gained recognition as a Flemish writer, poet, magistrate, and legal and fiscal expert. His notable contributions include the publication of Mare Liberum ex jure naturae, gentium & civili assertum, vindicatum, redevivum in 1726. Additionally, he served as the President of the Council of Flanders from 1742 until his death in 1773, in Ghent. On 10 April 1715, he married Therese Waltrude du Bois, the daughter of François du Bois and Catherine Devos, in Ghent.
