Oldfield Road railway station served the western part of Salford, in North West England, between 1852 and 1872.
The railway line between Salford and Bolton was built by the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Railway (MB&BR) and opened on 29 May 1838. [1] Originally, Salford was a terminus; and in October 1846, when the MB&B line was connected to the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR) in order to gain access to Manchester Victoria, this connection bypassed Salford. [2]
To cater for Salford passengers using Manchester trains, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, successor to the MB&BR, provided an intermediate station at Oldfield Road, approximately 1⁄2 mile (800 m ) to the west of Salford station; it opened in February 1852. [3] [4] In February 1853 it was renamed Oldfield Road, Salford; [4] and in September 1854 it became Salford (Oldfield Road). [5]
A direct connecting line between Salford and Manchester Victoria was opened on 1 August 1865, and as a result trains from Bolton to Manchester Victoria could now call at Salford; [6] that month, Salford (Oldfield Road) resumed its original name of Oldfield Road. [5] The 1865 connecting line made Oldfield Road redundant, but it was not closed until 2 December 1872. [4] [3]
The Ashton, Stalybridge and Liverpool Junction Railway was opened in 1846 to connect the industrial town of Ashton-under-Lyne to the developing railway network, and in particular to the port of Liverpool. It was a short line, joining the Manchester and Leeds Railway at Miles Platting and the connection to Liverpool was over that line and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.
The Manchester and Leeds Railway was a British railway company that built a line from Manchester to Normanton where it made a junction with the North Midland Railway, over which it relied on running powers to access Leeds. The line followed the valley of the River Calder for much of the way, making for easier gradients but by-passing many important manufacturing towns. Crossing the watershed between Lancashire and Yorkshire required a long tunnel. The line opened throughout in 1841.
The Ribble Valley line is a railway line that runs from Manchester Victoria through Blackburn to Clitheroe in Lancashire. Regular passenger services normally only run as far as Clitheroe, but occasional passenger services run along the line through north Lancashire towards the Yorkshire village of Hellifield, where it joins the Settle-Carlisle Railway. The line passes over the distinctive 48 span Whalley Viaduct.

It is now served by Northern Trains services on the Ribble Valley Line from Rochdale/Manchester Victoria to Blackburn and into Clitheroe.

Manchester Exchange was a railway station in Salford, England, immediately north of Manchester city centre, which served the city between 1884 and 1969. The main approach road ran from the end of Deansgate, near Manchester Cathedral, passing over the River Irwell, the Manchester-Salford boundary and Chapel Street; a second approach road led up from Blackfriars Road. Most of the station was in Salford, with only the 1929 extension to platform 3 east of the Irwell in Manchester.
Pendleton railway station was a railway station serving Pendleton, a district of Salford. It was located on Broughton Road (A576) just behind St. Thomas' Church. It was about 100 yards further up Broughton Road from Pendleton Bridge railway station and nearer Pendleton Church and Broad Street (A6). This station was known as Pendleton Broad Street due to its closeness to the A6 Broad Street some 100 yards away. It was on the Manchester Victoria to Wigan Wallgate line with a spur to the Manchester Victoria to Bolton line so trains to Bolton used it after the closure of Pendleton Bridge in 1966, and "Broad Street" was then dropped from its name.
Lower Darwen railway station was a railway station that served the village of Lower Darwen, in Lancashire, England.
The Manchester and Bolton Railway was a railway in the historic county of Lancashire, England, connecting Salford to Bolton. It was built by the proprietors of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal Navigation and Railway Company who had in 1831 converted from a canal company. The 10-mile (16 km) long railway was originally to have built upon most of the line of the canal, but it was eventually built alongside the Salford and Bolton arms of the canal. The Act of Parliament also allowed the construction of a connection to Bury, but technical constraints meant that it was never built.
Spring Vale railway station was a railway station that served the community of Spring Vale, in Darwen, Lancashire, England. It was opened by the Bolton, Blackburn, Clitheroe and West Yorkshire Railway on 3 August 1847, and was originally named Sough. At first, it was the southern terminus of the line from Blackburn ; the line south of Sough to Bolton opened on 12 June 1848 and was just located south of the road bridge at the top off Cranberry Lane The station was moved 150 yards north and was renamed Spring Vale and Sough in November 1870, and Spring Vale on 1 March 1877. It was closed on 5 August 1958, two days after nearby Lower Darwen. It achieved noteworthiness when, on the night of 25 September 1931, Mahatma Gandhi alighted from a train there to spend the night with a local family whilst visiting England to see the effects of his cotton making campaign on the British textile industry.
Agecroft Bridge railway station was on the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Railway. It served the Agecroft estates and the Manchester Racecourse, which was reached via Langley Road.
The Bolton and Preston Railway connected Bolton and Preston, in Lancashire, England. Its authorising Act of Parliament forbade its early completion to protect the North Union Railway and imposed other restrictions that limited the success of the B&PR. A change of route was authorised to by-pass the delay making it dependent on the goodwill of the NUR to reach Preston. The NUR saw the B&PR as a competitor and used underhand tactics to harm the success of the B&PR.
