Tyldesley railway station is a closed railway station in Greater Manchester. It was situated within the historic county of Lancashire.

Background

Coal mining was the chief motivation for building a railway in the area and the railway's supporters included many local colliery owners and industrialists. [1] The London and North Western Railway obtained an Act of Parliament to build a line through Tyldesley in 1861 and the first sod was cut by the Earl of Ellesmere at Worsley in the September. At that time the Tyldesley had the largest population of all the townships in the old Leigh parish and was destined to become the lin‌e's "premier station". [2]

At a junction to the west of Tyldesley station, the line to Wigan headed north west and the branch to Bedford Leigh, Bradshaw Leach and Kenyon Junction headed south west.

History

The ceremonial opening of the line took place on 24 August 1864. [2] A special train of 18 coaches decorated with flags set off from Hunt's Bank in Manchester before stopping at Eccles, Worsley and Ellenbrook. The streets of Tyldesley were decorated with flags and banners and the population crowded to greet the train which left for Bradshaw Leach. The train returned to Tyldesley and set out for Wigan via Chowbent, Hindley and Platt Bridge before once again returning to Tyldesley. Here the railway directors and their guests joined a procession around the town led by a band, members of local friendly societies and more than 2,000 children. [3]

Tyldesley station, in common with other stations on the Manchester to Wigan Line, was opened to the public on 1 September 1864. [4]

The station joined the London Midland and Scottish Railway during the grouping in 1923. It passed to the London Midland Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948. The station closed on 5 May 1969.

Structure

Tyldesley station was of timber construction, it had a booking office and first and second class waiting rooms. It had three through platforms, each was 300 feet long and protected by glass canopies. Two platforms were on an island platform reached by a subway. A goods station was built to the east. [4]

Coal

Collieries linked to the railway include Astley and Tyldesley Collieries' St George's, Nook and Gin Pit Collieries in Tyldesley connected at Jackson's sidings to the west of the station and the Shakerley, Green's Tyldesley Coal Company and Ramsden's Shakerley Collieries had connections at sidings approximately one mile to the east of Tyldesley station. Closure

My Father had been the Station Master that covered the stations on the line. The Winters of 1963 and 64 were so severe the Pennines froze 6 feet deep. Work stopped on the construction of the M62 motorway. In 1964 the cost of putting a railway bridge over the Motorway was £500,000. Harold Wilson the Prime Minister decided to close the line even though it ran at a small profit.


The Tyldesley Loopline closed following the Beeching Axe on 5 May 1969 and Tyldesley and all other stations along the line were closed. [6]

The former trackbed within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan was reserved in the Unitary Development Plan in case the rail route could be reinstated. The cutting in Tyldesley was filled in and the line of the railway was a footpath. The proposal for the Leigh-Tyldesley area, a guided bus [7] along the former trackbed from Leigh to the A580 East Lancashire Road at Ellenbrook was approved in 2005. Construction of the Leigh-Salford-Manchester Bus Rapid Transit route through the site of the station was completed and opened in April 2016 [8]

The Manchester and Wigan Railway refers to a railway in North West England, opened in 1864 and closed to passengers on 3 May 1969, which was part of the London and North Western Railway before the Grouping of 1923. This route was an alternative to the surviving route through Swinton, Walkden and Atherton.

Worsley railway station was opened in 1864 to serve the town of Worsley in Greater Manchester. The Tyldesley Loopline closed in 1969 as a result of the Beeching Axe.

The Tyldesley Loopline was part of the London and North Western Railway's Manchester and Wigan Railway line from Eccles to the junction west of Tyldesley station and its continuance south west via Bedford Leigh to Kenyon Junction on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Kenyon Junction was a railway station at Kenyon near Culcheth in Warrington, England. The station was built at the junction of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Kenyon and Leigh Junction Railway. It was situated in the historic county of Lancashire. The station opened in 1830 as Bolton Junction and closed to passengers on 2 January 1961 before closing completely on 1 August 1963. The junction fell out of use when the line serving Leigh was closed in 1969.

Pennington railway station served Pennington, Leigh, Greater Manchester, England on the Bolton and Leigh Railway. It was situated within the historic county of Lancashire.

The Astley and Tyldesley Collieries Company formed in 1900 owned coal mines on the Lancashire Coalfield south of the railway in Astley and Tyldesley, then in the historic county of Lancashire, England. The company became part of Manchester Collieries in 1929 and some of its collieries were nationalised in 1947.

Tyldesley Coal Company was a coal mining company formed in 1870 in Tyldesley, on the Manchester Coalfield in the historic county of Lancashire, England that had its origins in Yew Tree Colliery, the location for a mining disaster that killed 25 men and boys in 1858.

Bedford Colliery, also known as Wood End Pit, was a coal mine on the Manchester Coalfield in Bedford, Leigh, Lancashire, England. The colliery was owned by John Speakman, who started sinking two shafts on land at Wood End Farm in the northeast part of Bedford, south of the London and North Western Railway's Tyldesley Loopline in about 1874. Speakman's father owned Priestners, Bankfield, and Broadoak collieries in Westleigh. Bedford Colliery remained in the possession of the Speakman family until it was amalgamated with Manchester Collieries in 1929.

Manchester Collieries was a coal mining company with headquarters in Walkden formed from a group of independent companies operating on the Manchester Coalfield in 1929. The Mining Industry Act of 1926 attempted to stem the post-war decline in coal mining and encourage independent companies to merge in order to modernise and better survive the economic conditions of the day. Robert Burrows of the Atherton company Fletcher Burrows proposed a merger of several independent companies operating to the west of Manchester. The merger was agreed and took place in March 1929.

Bridgewater Collieries originated from the coal mines on the Manchester Coalfield in Worsley in the historic county of Lancashire owned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater in the second half of the 18th century. After the Duke's death in 1803 his estate was managed by the Bridgewater Trustees until the 3rd Earl of Ellesmere inherited the estates in 1903. Bridgewater Collieries was formed in 1921 by the 4th Earl. The company merged with other prominent mining companies to form Manchester Collieries in 1929.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">New Manchester</span>

New Manchester or The City was an isolated mining community on the Manchester Coalfield north of Mosley Common in the Tyldesley township, England. It lies west of a boundary stone at Ellenbrook which marks the ancient boundary of the Hundreds of Salford and West Derby, the boundary of Eccles and Leigh ecclesiastical parishes, Tyldesley, Worsley and Little Hulton townships and the metropolitan districts of Wigan and Salford. The route of the Roman road from Manchester to Wigan and the Tyldesley Loopline passed south of the village. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's Manchester to Southport line passed to the north.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Leigh-Salford-Manchester Bus Rapid Transit</span> Bus rapid transit system in Greater Manchester

The Leigh-Salford-Manchester Bus Rapid Transit scheme in Greater Manchester, England provides transport connections between Leigh, Atherton, Tyldesley, Ellenbrook and Manchester city centre via Salford. The guided busway and bus rapid transit (BRT) scheme promoted by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) opened on 3 April 2016. Built by Balfour Beatty at a total cost of £122 million to improve links from former Manchester Coalfield towns into Manchester city centre, the busway proposal encountered much opposition and a public enquiry in 2002 before construction finally started in 2013. A branch route from Atherton, and an extension to the Manchester Royal Infirmary have been added to the planned original scheme.

The Kenyon and Leigh Junction Railway (K&LJR) was constructed to link the Bolton and Leigh Railway (B&LR), which terminated at the Leigh Branch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, with the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR) at Kenyon.
