A rugged smartphone is a specific type of toughened smartphone which is designed to be completely sealed within a durable housing to protect it against damage from water, shock, dust, and vibration. [1] [2] [3] Rugged smartphones are designed to survive extreme weather and temperatures, accidental damage, and rough handling; making them ideal for working outdoors, or in harsh environments, along with use during extreme sports, such as sailing, rock climbing, etc. [1] Most rugged smartphones have been tested to tough IP68 standards. [1]
However, not all waterproof smartphones will be ruggedised. [1]
There are three general types of rugged phone:
The following IP code ratings for ingress protection (IP), as defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard 60529 (equivalent to European standard EN 60529), are typically used for certifying various toughened and ruggedised smartphones. [5] [6] [7]
IP54 — Solid particle (dust) protection level 5 (protection from harmful dust) and liquid ingress (waterproof) protection level 4 (protection from splashing water from any direction).
IP56 — Solid particle (dust) protection level 5 (protection from harmful dust) and liquid ingress (waterproof) protection level 6 (protection from high pressure water jets). [6] [8]
IP57 — Solid particle (dust) protection level 5 (protection from harmful dust) and liquid ingress (waterproof) protection level 7 (protection from full immersion at depths between 15 centimetres (5.9 inches) and 1 metre (3 feet 3 inches)). [6] [8]
IP67 — Solid particle (dust) protection level 6 (protection from all dust) and liquid ingress (waterproof) protection level 7 (protection from full immersion at depths between 15 centimetres (5.9 inches) and 1 metre (3 feet 3 inches)). [6] [8]
IP68 — Solid particle (dust) protection level 6 (protection from all dust) and liquid ingress (waterproof) protection level 8 (protection from full immersion at depths determined by the manufacturer). [6] [8]
IP69K — In the IEC 60529 rating system for ingress protection (IP), IP6* refers to the product's ability to resist ingress of dust. The IP*9K refers to the product's ability to resist ingress of high temperature (steam) / high pressure water. If the device passes all these tests, then it can be considered as IP69K rated smartphone, and can be used in harsh environments with high pressure / steam cleaning. [9]
MIL-STD-810G [10] is a U.S. military standard that stipulates a level of durability for an item of equipment. Specifically, it means the equipment has been subjected to a series of twenty-nine (29) tests, including shock tests, vibration tests, and more. This means it should be field ready,[ weasel words ] or even 'combat ready' in principle. A lot of technology sold to the U.S. military must be MIL-STD-810G compliant. [10] [11]
The IP code or ingress protection code indicates how well a device is protected against water and dust. It is defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under the international standard IEC 60529 which classifies and provides a guideline to the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water. It is published in the European Union by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) as EN 60529.
A rugged computer or ruggedized computer is a computer specifically designed to operate reliably in harsh usage environments and conditions, such as strong vibrations, extreme temperatures and wet or dusty conditions. They are designed from inception for the type of rough use typified by these conditions, not just in the external housing but in the internal components and cooling arrangements as well.
The Motorola Defy (A8210/MB525) is an Android-based smartphone from Motorola. It filled a niche market segment, by being one of the few small, IP67 rated smartphones available at the time of its late 2010 release; it is water resistant, dust resistant, and has an impact-resistant screen. An updated version of the original model, Defy+ (MB526) was released in 2011. Other variants were also released before a revival of the Defy name in 2021.
The Casio G'zOne Commando is a smartphone which is ruggedized and runs the Android operating system. It is made by NEC Casio Mobile Communications, a joint venture of three Japanese electronics makers: NEC, Casio and Hitachi. It was first released by Verizon in the United States on 28 April 2011.
The Sony SmartWatch is a line of wearable devices developed and marketed by Sony Mobile from 2012 to 2016 through three generations. They connect to Android smartphones and can display information such as Twitter feeds and SMS messages, among other things.
Panasonic Toughpad is a series of tablet computers developed and designed by Panasonic as a subset of its series of Toughbook rugged computers. The first Toughpad was unveiled on November 7, 2011 in the United States.
The Samsung Rugby Smart (SGH-i847) was a ruggedized Android smartphone manufactured by Samsung, for use on the AT&T Mobility network. The phone was 3.5G capable, but lacked LTE support. It was dust and vibration resistant, as well as waterproof to a depth of 1 meter (3.3 ft) for 30 minutes, earning the phone an ingress protection rating of IP67.
The Sony Xperia Z is an Android-based smartphone by Sony. Announced at CES 2013 the phone was officially released on 9 February 2013 in Japan and 1 March 2013 in Singapore and the UK. It was released in the U.S months later. The Xperia Z was initially shipped with the Android 4.1.2 operating system. The smartphone has Ingress Protection Ratings of IP55 and IP57. It also contains a 13.1 MP Exmor RS camera sensor, and the screen of the phone consists of a TFT 1920x1080 display, with 441 ppi. It would be the first smartphone in the Sony Xperia Z series, continuing all the way up to the Xperia Z5.

The Sony Xperia M5 is a water & dust resistant high-range Android smartphone manufactured by Sony serving as the successor to the Xperia M4 Aqua. The phone was unveiled on 3 August 2015 along with the Xperia C5 Ultra. The phone is marketed as a “super mid-range” phone, which is between its predecessor, the M4 Aqua, and the flagship, the Xperia Z5
The Sony Xperia M4 Aqua is a mid-range Android smartphone developed and manufactured by Sony. The phone was unveiled along with Xperia Z4 Tablet in the press conference held by Sony during the 2015 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on March 2. Five months later, a successor Xperia M5 was announced. However, the M4 Aqua's production is still ongoing and is marketed in a lower range than the M5.

The LG V series was a line of high-end Android devices produced by LG Electronics. This series is slated above the LG G series.
