Soyuz MS-17 was a Soyuz spaceflight that was launched on 14 October 2020. [4] [11] It transported three crew members of the Expedition 63/64 crew to the International Space Station. Soyuz MS-17 was the 145th crewed flight of a Soyuz spacecraft. The crew consisted of a Russian commander and a Russian and American flight engineer. [12] [13] [14]
The mission marked the first use of a new "ultrafast" two-orbit rendezvous flight plan with the Soyuz, which saw Soyuz MS-17 arrive at the ISS within approximately three hours after the launch. [3] [15] [16] [8]
On 19 March 2021,the crew of Soyuz MS-17 boarded their spacecraft to relocate it from Rassvet to Poisk to make way for the arrival and docking of the Soyuz MS-18 spacecraft, [9] which launched on 9 April 2021 carrying cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky,Pyotr Dubrov and NASA astronaut,Mark T. Vande Hei to the ISS ahead of a six-month stay. The two spacecraft had a nine-day handover period before Soyuz MS-17 departed. This is necessary to avoid de-crewing the Russian Orbital Segment (ROS) of the ISS since no Russian cosmonaut was present aboard SpaceX Crew-1. [11]

Early planning had listed Russian cosmonaut Nikolai Chub as the mission's Flight Engineer 2,pending a NASA decision on whether they would purchase more seats on the Soyuz. In May 2020,NASA purchased a Soyuz seat and assigned NASA astronaut Kathleen Rubins to the Flight Engineer 2 position, backed up by astronaut Mark T. Vande Hei. [17] [20]
Originally Russian cosmonauts Anatoli Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner were set to fly as Commander and Flight Engineer 1 respectively. In February 2020,however,the two cosmonauts were moved to the Soyuz MS-16 flight due to medical issues with the commander of Soyuz MS-16,Nikolai Tikhonov. Ivanishin and Vagner were replaced by Ryzhikov and Kud-Sverchkov. Babkin remains an active cosmonaut, but has not yet been to space, while Tikhonov has retired from Roscosmos' astronaut corps.
Reacting to the COVID-19 pandemic,Roscosmos implemented a two-cosmonaut reserve crew to ensure the flight could go on with no delays,in the unlikely event both the prime and backup crews fall ill. It was not confirmed whether NASA planned to add an astronaut of their own to the reserve crew. [21]
Shannon Walker is an American physicist and a NASA astronaut selected in 2004. She launched on her first mission into space on June 25,2010,onboard Soyuz TMA-19 and spent over 163 days in space.

Anatoli Alekseyevich Ivanishin is a former Russian cosmonaut. His first visit to space was to the International Space Station on board the Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft as an Expedition 29/Expedition 30 crew member, launching in November 2011 and returning in April 2012. Ivanishin was the commander of the International Space Station for Expedition 49.
Andrew Richard "Drew" Morgan is a NASA astronaut from the class of 2013.
Soyuz MS-09 was a Soyuz spaceflight that launched on 6 June 2018. It transported three members of the Expedition 56/57 crew to the International Space Station (ISS). MS-09 is the 138th flight of a Soyuz spacecraft. The crew consisted of a Russian commander along with an American and a German flight engineer. The mission ended at 05:02 UTC on 20 December 2018.
Sergey Valeryevich Prokopyev is a Russian cosmonaut. On June 6,2018,he launched on his first flight into space aboard Soyuz MS-09 and spent 197 days in space as a flight engineer on Expedition 56/57. On September 21,2022,he launched aboard Soyuz MS-22 and returned onboard Soyuz MS-23 on September 27,2023.
Soyuz MS-16 was a Soyuz spaceflight launched on 9 April 2020,which transported three members of the Expedition 62/63 crew to the International Space Station.
Andrei Nikolaevich Babkin is a Russian Engineer and Cosmonaut who was selected in April 2010. He was scheduled to make his first flight into space in April 2020 onboard Soyuz MS-16,although in February 2020 he and Nikolai Tikhonov were removed from the flight for medical reasons. Russian media reported that based on future crew assignments,he was unlikely to ever fly into space for Roscosmos. In September 2024,he was removed from the roster of active cosmonauts.
Expedition 62 was the 62nd long duration mission to the International Space Station, which began 5:50 UTC on 6 February 2020 with the undocking of the Soyuz MS-13 spacecraft. The expedition consisted of Russian commander Oleg Skripochka,as well as American flight engineers Jessica Meir and Andrew Morgan. The second part of Expedition 62 was made up of the three crew members from Soyuz MS-16.
Ivan Viktorovich Vagner is a Russian engineer and cosmonaut who was selected in October 2010. He graduated from the Baltic State Technical University in 2008,before working as an engineer for RKK Energia.
Soyuz MS-18 was a Soyuz spaceflight that was launched on 9 April 2021 at 07:42:41 UTC. It transported three members of the Expedition 64 crew to the International Space Station (ISS). Soyuz MS-18 was the 146th crewed flight of a Soyuz spacecraft. The launching crew consisted of a Russian commander,a Russian flight engineer, and an American flight engineer of NASA. The spacecraft returned to Earth on 17 October 2021 following 191 days in space.
