Starlord is an open-ended, computer moderated, space-based play-by-mail game. Designed and moderated by Mike Singleton, gameplay began initially in the United Kingdom, with Flying Buffalo launching a version in the United States in 1983. Gameplay was limited to 50 players roleplaying as Starlords with the goal of becoming emperor by conquering the Throne Star. Starlord was reviewed multiple times in magazines such as Dragon and The Space Gamer in the early 1980s, receiving generally positive reviews, with one reviewer noting the possibility of the game lasting for years.

Publication history

Mike Singleton designed Starlord. [1] The game was computer moderated. [2] Singleton moderated the game using his Commodore PET. [3] Singleton started gameplay in the United Kingdom, but as of 1983, Flying Buffalo began running the game in the United States as well. [1]

Starlord was based on a 1977 board game of the same name invented by Gary Bedrosian and Lee Elmendorf.[ citation needed ]

Gameplay

The game depicted a declining galactic empire in a galaxy with 1000 stars, in which 50 players are "starlords" who attempt to take over the Throne Star and become the new emperor. [4] At the outset, players controlled one Base Star out of 1,000 available. [5] Stars were activity hubs, not celestial objects, and comprised 14 types. [2] The "Empyr" controlled the non-assigned stars, "with up to ten ships at each and several hundred at the central Throne Star". [5] However, "sadly, the last Emperor has died, and the Empyr is run by imperial computers", proving an opportunity for players to seize the throne. [5] A player that took the Throne Star received various benefits, including control of the Empyr's forces and free turns, but also acquired "up to 49 enemies". [5]

Lee Simpson noted in the Winter 1983 issue of Flagship magazine that "Mike Singleton has since admitted, in earlier Starlord games the Throne Star was initially too lightly garrisoned", allowing players to become Emperor early in the game. [5]

Reception

W.G. Armintrout reviewed Starlord in the March 1982 issues of The Space Gamer . [4] Armintrout commented that "In my opinion, Starlord is one of the top five PBM games going. I highly recommend it to all gamers, even those who have never yet tried this type of game." [4]

In the April 1983 edition of Dragon (Issue 72), Michael Gray stated "A player who becomes Emperor early in a game, and is then dethroned and eliminated, may still win the game by accumulating lots of points during his or her reign. But with 50 players per game, Starlord could take many years to complete." [6]

W.G. Armintrout reviewed Starlord again in the May–June 1983 issue of The Space Gamer . [1] Armintrout commented that "Starlord continues to receive my highest recommendation – a masterpiece of game design, ridiculously easy to play yet moderately challenging. Those who have never tried PBM could start here. I have only two quibbles: You can't choose your player name (you are named after your Base Star), and the map should have a circular frame." [1]

Diplomacy has been played by mail since 1963, introducing a multi-player aspect to PBM games. Flying Buffalo Inc. pioneered the first commercially available PBM game in 1970. Players today can choose a postal mail or email format. Fifteen players per game assume one of six available roles and explore and conquer planets within a universe comprising 225 worlds. The object of the game is to attain a predetermined number of points which are generated by various actions during gameplay. Multiple game variants are available. Starweb is still available for play as of 2021 through the company Rick Loomis PBM Games.

<i>Empyrean Challenge</i> Science fiction play-by-mail game

Empyrean Challenge is a strategic science fiction play-by-mail (PBM) game. Published by Superior Simulations in 1978, its introduction was important to the nascent PBM industry. 150 players per game strove to dominate a cluster of star systems. Diplomacy, combat, economics, technological development, colonization, and other factors were important aspects of gameplay. Detailed work was required in all aspects of the game, requiring a significant investment in time for players. Reviewer Jim Townsend stated in 1988 that Empyrean Challenge was "the most complex game system on Earth".

<i>The Nuts & Bolts of PBM</i> American play-by-mail magazine

The Nuts & Bolts of PBM was a magazine dedicated to play-by-mail games, first published in June 1980 as Nuts and Bolts of Starweb, and edited by Richard J. Buda. The magazine incorporated in 1983 to Bolt Publications. Rick Loomis of Flying Buffalo Games stated in 1985 that the Nuts & Bolts of PBM was the first PBM magazine not published by a PBM company. He stated that "It was a fun magazine, but somewhat ahead of its time, and it had no financial backing." Afterward, the name changed to Nuts & Bolts of Gaming.

Heroic Fantasy is a computer-moderated, dungeon crawl play-by-mail game. It has been active since 1982 when it was published by Flying Buffalo. The initial edition involved nine dungeon levels. Players selected characters with classes such as cleric, fighter, ranger, thief, along with races and various attributes. Additional starting variables included spells and weapons. Diplomacy was not part of Silverdawn, gameplay was solo without interaction with other players. The setting was the world of Nyarna. The game's flexible narrative gaming system allowed players to choose good or evil paths. Silverdawn received two generally positive reviews in the early 1980s with one reviewer noting some drawbacks to the game.

Vorcon Wars is an closed-ended, computer moderated, space-based play-by-mail game. It was published by Vorcon Games and running as early as 1981. 16 players vie for control of the planet Vorcon. Gameplay occurred on a hex map with over 1,000 hexes of varying types and resources. Players strived for expansion through combat and other means. By 1986, the publisher launched an additional version for play called Super Vorcon Wars. In 1989, Vorcon Wars placed second in the non-fantasy wargames section of Flagship's Spring 1989 Award Winners.
