Ian Wright is a British engineer who has held positions in several Formula One teams.

Career

Wright has worked for 30 years at the top level of motorsport complemented by 5 years in the aerospace industry.

In 1990, Wright became a part of McLaren team, where he played a pivotal role in vehicle performance simulation, toolset development for analysis, and competitor comparison. His contributions were instrumental in securing championships for McLaren in 1990 and 1991. Wright led the development of new analytical techniques that identified key vehicle performance development problems at McLaren in 1996 and 1997 and helped change the way vehicle performance was developed with the outcome of helping McLaren win the world championship in 1998. Wright began working in Formula One in the late 1990s as an engineer for British American Racing, he remained with the team after it was acquired by Honda and renamed Honda Racing F1 Team in 2006 and then Brawn GP in 2009.

Wright became head of engineering software when Mercedes-Benz took control of the team. He left the Mercedes team in the summer of 2014 to take up a role outside of Formula 1 in the United States.

In early July 2017, it was announced that Sauber had hired Wright, who had already started working at the team as its new head of performance, as a new reinforcement for the remainder of the 2017 Formula 1 season. [2] He remained with the team after it rebranded to Alfa Romeo Racing in 2019 as head of vehicle science. [3]

Sauber Motorsport AG is a Swiss motorsport engineering company. It was founded in 1970 by Peter Sauber, who progressed through hillclimbing and the World Sportscar Championship to reach Formula One in 1993. Sauber operated under their own name from 1993 until 2005 and from 2011 until 2018. They were known as BMW Sauber from 2006 to 2010 and as Alfa Romeo F1 Team from 2019 to 2023 in a partnership deal with BMW and Alfa Romeo respectively. Sauber will return in 2024 as Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, and is set to be the Audi factory team from 2026 onwards.

The Japanese automobile manufacturer Honda has participated in Formula One, as an engine manufacturer and team owner, for various periods since 1964. Honda's involvement in Formula One began as a full team and engine entry in the 1964 season, and in 1965 they achieved their first victory at the Mexican Grand Prix. After further success with John Surtees, Honda withdrew at the end of the 1968 season due to difficulties selling road cars in the United States and Honda driver Jo Schlesser's fatal accident.

Italian motor manufacturer Alfa Romeo has participated multiple times in Formula One. The brand has competed in motor racing as both a constructor and engine supplier sporadically between 1950 and 1987, and later as a commercial partner since 2015. The company's works drivers won the first two World Drivers' Championships in the pre-war Alfetta: Nino Farina in 1950 and Juan Manuel Fangio in 1951. Following these successes, Alfa Romeo withdrew from Formula One.

Formula One sponsorship liveries have been used since the 1968 season. Before the arrival of sponsorship liveries in 1968 the nationality of the team determined the colour of a car entered by the team, e.g. cars entered by Italian teams were rosso corsa red, cars entered by French teams were bleu de France blue, and cars entered by British teams were British racing green. Major sponsors such as BP, Shell, and Firestone had pulled out of the sport ahead of this season, prompting the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile to allow unrestricted sponsorship.
