Indoor athletics has been contested at every Asian Indoor Games and Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games since the inaugural games at the 2005 Asian Indoor Games, except the first combined games at the 2013 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. The programme includes track and field events in 26 events (17 events each). The World Athletics and Asian Athletics Association are the world and continental respectively governing body.
There are five Asian Indoor Games and Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games that indoor athletics competed. The 2013 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Incheon, South Korea was only the games that excluded indoor athletics.

The Asian Indoor Games were a multi-sport event that was contested every two years among athletes representing countries from Asia. The games were regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia. The first games were held in 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand.
2009 Asian Martial Arts Games, the 1st and only Asian Martial Arts Games in history were a pancontinential martial arts multi-sport event held in Bangkok, Thailand from 1 to 9 August 2009 with 9 events contested. Due to Political crisis in Thailand And 2009 Swine Flu, the Bangkok Asian Martial Arts Games Organizing Committee (BAMAGOC) and the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Thailand decided that Asian Martial Arts Games moved from the original schedule of 25 April to 3 May to 1 to 9 August. Four years later, the event merged with another Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) event – Asian Indoor Games to form the larger Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
The Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games is a pancontinental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. It is organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and consists of Indoor and martial arts events with TV broadcasting potential, some of which were not contested at the Asian Games and Asian Winter Games Programs and are not Olympic sports.
Myanmar is a member of the Southeast Asian Zone of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and has participated in the Asian Games since the inception of the Games in 1951. The Myanmar Olympic Committee, established in 1947 and recognised in the same year by the International Olympic Committee, is the National Olympic Committee for Myanmar.
Pakistan is a member of the South Asian Zone of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), has participated in the Asian Games since their second edition in 1954. The Pakistan Olympic Association, established in 1948, and recognised in the same year by the International Olympic Committee, is the National Olympic Committee for Pakistan.
Philippines is a member of the South East Asian Zone of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and has participated in the Asian Games since their inception in 1951. The Philippine Olympic Committee, established in 1911, and recognized in 1929 by the International Olympic Committee, is the National Olympic Committee for Philippines.
The 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which is also counted as the 5th Asian Indoor Games, was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan in 2017. It became the third city in the former Soviet countries to win the right of hosting an Olympic Council of Asia-sanctioned event, following Astana and Almaty in Kazakhstan, which jointly-hosted the 2011 Asian Winter Games. The host city was chosen in Kuwait on 19 December 2010. On 6 July 2013 the flag of the Olympic Council of Asia was officially handed over to the mayor of the city of Ashgabat.
The Refugee Team will participate in the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games which take place in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan from 17-27 September 2017.
Amir Moradi is an Iranian middle-distance runner who specialises in the 800 metres. He won a bronze medal at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
Jung Il-woo is a South Korean athlete specialising in the shot put. He won a bronze medal at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
Gulshanoi Satarova is a Kyrgyz middle-distance runner. She won a silver medal in the 1500 metres at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
Atchima Eng-Chuan is a Thai sprinter specialising in the 400 metres. She won a bronze medal at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. She holds the current national indoor record in the 400 metres.
Nauru competed at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan from September 17 to 27. 9 participants competed in 3 different sports. Nauru did not win any medals in the multi-sport event.
Macau competed at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games from 17 to 27 September 2017. Macau sent a delegation consisting of 35 competitors for the multi-sport event.
The 2021 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, officially known as the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and also known as Bangkok–Chonburi 2021, is scheduled to be a pan-Asian multi-sport event in indoor and martial arts sports held from 17 to 26 November 2023 in the Thai capital city, Bangkok and the province of Chonburi. Originally due to take place from 21 to 30 May 2021, the event was postponed in January 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) officially awarded the games to Bangkok and Chonburi Province and signed the hosting rights contract in April 2020.
Pratchaya Tepparak is a Thai athlete specialising in the triple jump. He won a silver medal at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
3x3 basketball was featured in the Asian Indoor Games and the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games official programme in 2009, and since 2017. The inaugural staging of 3x3 basketball was seen in 2007, as a demonstration sport. The programme includes 2 events. The FIBA and FIBA Asia are the world and continental respectively governing body.
