Kabare Territory is a territory in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, [1] [2] on the western side of Lake Kivu.

Kabare Territory is the home region of the Shi people.It is the capital of Bushi Kingdom, located in the South Kivu Province, Eastern Congo. The King of this Chiefdom is Mwami Kabare Nnabushi. [ citation needed ]

History

Kabare Territory was the central part of the former Bushi Kingdom between the Mitumba Mountains and Lake Kivu. People of Kabare Territory are Bashi or Shi people, speaking Mashi or Shi language. They are mainly farmers and small business entrepreneurs.

On 7 August 2015 the 2015 South Kivu earthquake, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, struck 35 km (22 mi) north northeast of Kabare at a depth of 12.0 km (7.5 mi). [3]

Geography

Kabare Territory is located in the far eastern Congo on the western shores of Lake Kivu. Part of Kahuzi-Biéga National Park is located in Kabare Territory. [4]

Kabare Territory borders the country of Rwanda to the east, across Lake Kivu. It borders the territories of Kalehe in the north; Shabunda in the west, Walungu in the south, and Idjwi (an island in the middle of the Lake Kivu) also to the east. [5]

It lies along the Mitumba Mountains and includes the administrative territories of Walungu, Kabare, Kalehe, Mwenga, Idjwi and Uvira surrounding Bukavu, which is its main city. There are about 7-12 million inhabitants in the region speaking the Mashi or Shi language. The Bushi is also a kingdom that is organized into many localities or sub-chiefdoms.

Walikale Territory is a territory located within the Congolese province of North Kivu, in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The headquarters are in the town of Walikale. The locality is situated between Bukavu and Lubutu on DR Congo National Road No. 3 in the valley of the river Lowa, 135 km to the west of Goma.

The 2002 Kalehe earthquake occurred on October 24 at 06:08 UTC. This earthquake had a magnitude Mw 6.2, and the epicenter was located in Democratic Republic of the Congo, near Lake Kivu. Two people were reported dead. Building damage was reported in Goma, Lwiro, Kalehe, and Mugeri. The seismicity, volcanism, and uplift in the basin of Lake Kivu delimits the rift of a tectonic plate. Lake Kivu belongs to the western branch of the East African Rift System (EARS). The western branch is usually divided into several segments, and Lake Kivu belongs to the northern segment.

Shi, or Nyabungu, is a Bantu language of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Mount Kahuzi is an extinct volcano in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is within the Kahuzi-Biéga National Park, a World Heritage Site.

Kalehe Territory is a territory in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its administrative centre is the town of Kalehe on the western shore of Lake Kivu. Other important towns include Buguli, Bunyakiri, Kalangala, Kalungu, Minova, and Nyamasasa.

It is very close to Idjwi Island, Masisi Territory, Lake Kivu on its North Western shore and is only 45 km from the Goma city. The town's development is linked with important refugee-related history, including those from Rwanda in 1994, those from Masisi in 1992–1997, and other surrounding areas in northern South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is known for being the site of the systematic rape of refugees by DRC troops. WE actually find many local organisations involved in the management of Gender Based Violence (GBV) working tirelessly to restore dignity to women and girls who were raped( Panzi Foundation DRC is one of them, and it is very active in Buzi -Bulenga area).

Bweremana (Bweremane) is a village in Kalehe Territory, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is on Lake Kivu 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north of Minova via Route N-2.

The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a protected area near Bukavu town in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is situated near the western bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border. Established in 1970 by the Belgian photographer and conservationist Adrien Deschryver, the park is named after two dormant volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega, which are within its limits. With an area of 6,000 square kilometres (2,300 sq mi), Kahuzi-Biega is one of the biggest national parks in the country. Set in both mountainous and lowland terrain, it is one of the last refuges of the rare species of Eastern lowland gorilla, an endangered category under the IUCN Red List. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1980 for its unique biodiversity of rainforest habitat and its eastern lowland gorillas. In 1997, it was listed on the List of World Heritage in Danger because of the political instability of the region, an influx of refugees, and increasing wildlife exploitation.

Kasheke is a village in the Kalehe Territory in the vicinity of Lake Kivu, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. Kasheke is 1,475 meters above sea level and is close to the villages of Bulengo, Kamabale, Tchofi and Kabamba.

National Road 3 (N3) is a road in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It runs from the city of Bukavu on the south end of Lake Kivu to the city of Kisangani.

Kamanyola is a town in Ngweshe Chiefdom in the Walungu Territory north of Uvira in the South Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kamanyola has an elevation of 901 meters and situated nearby to the suburb of Mwaro and the village of Mubombo, near the border with Rwanda and Burundi.

Kaniola Groupement is a political administrative entity and one of 16 groupements (groupings) that constitute the Ngweshe Chiefdom of the Shi people. Kaniola Groupement has an elevation of 1800 meters and is located 64 km from Bukavu city and 12 km from the capital of Walungu Territory of the South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Incidentally, it borders the Kahuzi-Biéga National Park and the Nindja Chiefdom to the northeast, bordered by Izege and Walungu groupements to the east, bordered by Burhale and Mulamba groupments in the West.
