Lambton High School (also known as New Lambton High School) is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school, located in the suburb of Lambton in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Contents

The school was established in 1974. In 2018 the enrolment was approximately 1,130 students. The school is operated by the New South Wales Department of Education.

Education

In 2009, Carmel Tebbutt, the NSW Minister for Education, honored 40 students from public schools across NSW with a Minister’s Award for Excellence. Among the recipients were three students from Lambton High School. [3]

History

Lambton High School was formed in 1974, by the merger of Newcastle Hill Boys High School and Hamilton Girls High School. [4]

On 29 September 2008, the Federal Cabinet (including Prime Minister Kevin Rudd) attended Lambton High School as part of the Australian Government Community Cabinet Program. [5] [6] [7]

Co-curricular activities

Green Day

In 1995, the school began celebrating "Green Day" to raise awareness about environmental problems and promote environmental sustainability. [8] The focus was on climate change and global warming. [9]

Sport

The school holds positions in events such as basketball, netball and waterpolo. [10]

Robert James Heffron, also known as Bob Heffron or R. J. Heffron, was a long-serving New South Wales politician, union organiser and Labor Party Premier of New South Wales from 1959 to 1964. Born in New Zealand, Heffron became involved in various Socialist and labour movements in New Zealand and later Australia before joining the Australian Labor Party. A prominent unionist organiser, we was gaoled for "conspiracy to strike action". He was later elected to the Parliament of New South Wales for Botany in 1930. However his disputes with party leader Jack Lang led to his expulsion from the ALP in 1936 and Heffron formed his own party from disgruntled Labor MPs known as the Industrial Labor Party. The success of his party enabled his readmission to the party and his prominence in a post-Lang NSW Branch which won office in 1941.
