Kerala Motor Vehicles Department

The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is a field department of the Department of Transport, which is one of the administrative departments of the Government of Kerala. The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department is entrusted with the responsibility of providing registration of vehicles in Kerala, issuance of Driving license, issuance of various permits, collection of road taxes, control of vehicular pollution and enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act and motor vehicles rules. The Kerala MVD functions under the provisions of Section 213 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The Motor Vehicles Department is headed by the Transport Commissioner, an Indian Police Service officer of the rank of Additional Director General of Police. The Transport Commissioner is assisted by the Additional Transport Commissioner, Joint Transport Commissioners and Deputy Transport Commissioners. The current Transport Commissioner is S. Sreejith IPS. [4]

In India, a driving licence is an official document that authorises its holder to operate various types of motor vehicles on highways and some other roads to which the public has access. In various Indian states, they are administered by the Regional Transport Authorities/Offices (RTA/RTO). A driving licence is required in India by any person driving a vehicle on any highway or other road defined in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. This act sets limits on the minimum age for vehicle operation ranging from 16 to 20, depending on specific circumstances. A modern photo of the driving licence can also serve many of the purposes of an identity card in non-driving contexts, such as proof of identity or age.
