Municipal Corporation of The City of Panvel is the governing body of the city of Panvel in Raigad district. [2] [3] [4] Municipal Corporation mechanism in India was introduced during British Rule with formation of municipal corporation in Madras (Chennai) in 1688, later followed by municipal corporations in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) by 1762. [5] Panvel Municipal Corporation is headed by Mayor of city and governed by Commissioner. Panvel Municipal Corporation has been formed with functions to improve the infrastructure of town.

Contents

In 2016 Maharashtra State cabinet decided to elevate Panvel Municipal Council to Municipal Corporation. [6]

History

Panvel Municipal Council was formed on August 25, 1852 as the first municipal council in the country. The First President of Panvel Municipality is Mr.Yusuf Noor Muhammad Master, The initial notification for converting Panvel Municipal Council to Municipal Corporation came in the year 1991 but was never finalised. After rapid urbanisation post-2000, Panvel Municipal Council was eventually upgraded to Municipal Corporation in 2016. [7]

Panvel Municipal Corporation is the first Municipal Corporation in Raigad district, 9th in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and 27th in the state of Maharashtra. The Municipal Corporation includes 29 revenue villages of Panvel taluka including CIDCO colonies of Taloja, Kharghar, Kalamboli, Kamothe, New Panvel covering area of 110 km2.

The Government of Maharashtra through its Urban Development Department's notification dated 14 October 2016 has added 11 more villages (namely: Bid, Adivali, Rohinjan, Dhansar, Pisarve, Turbhe, Karvale Budruk, Nagzeri, Taloje Majkur, Ghot and Koynavele) of Panvel Taluka to the Panvel Municipal Corporation. Earlier these 11 villages were part of MMRDA's sanctioned development plan of "AKBSNA"(Ambernath Kulgaon Badlapur Surrounding Notified Area).

Administration

The Municipal Corporation is headed by Shri. Mangesh Sharmila Pandurang Chitale, who holds the post of Municipal Commissioner-cum-Administrator in the absence of an elected legislature. [13] The municipal commissioner is supported by additional officers. No elections have been conducted after the term of previous corporators came to and end on July 9, 2022 and due to COVID induced lockdowns elections were delayed. [14]

Panvel is a city and taluka in Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. It is highly populated due to its closeness to Mumbai. Panvel is also governed for development purpose by the body of Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Panvel Municipal Corporation is the first Municipal Corporation in Raigad and the 27th Municipal corporation of Maharashtra State.

Kalamboli is one of the nodes of Navi Mumbai in Raigad District. It is a transportation hub, being situated at the junction of the Sion-Panvel Highway, NH 48, Panvel By-Pass, NH 66 and Mumbai-Pune Expressway and is among the biggest iron and steel delivery centers in India. The township, like the rest of Navi Mumbai, is divided into sectors, which are further divided into plots. The residential and commercial areas of Kalamboli are divided by the NH 4 highway. Roadpali, a region to the north of Kalamboli, is developing at a faster rate than the latter with many residential projects coming up due to availability of land. Roadpali is located along the Taloja Link Road. Kalamboli also houses the Navi Mumbai Police Headquarters. CIDCO is the nodal administrative body for Kalamboli node. Kalamboli also has a Sewage Water Treatment Plant owned by CIDCO. Kalamboli is now governed by Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC). The terminal of Mumbai-Pune Expressway is at Kalamboli. It also has Navi Mumbai's largest marble market alongside the Sion Panvel Highway.

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is the civic body that governs Pimpri-Chinchwad which includes Pimpri, Akurdi, Chinchwad, Nigdi, and the remainder of the northwestern city limits of Pune, India. It was established on 11 October 1982. It governs an area of 181 km2 with a population of 1.72 million. The executive power of the PCMC is vested in the Municipal Commissioner, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer appointed by the Government of Maharashtra. The position is held by Shekhar Singh (IAS) during the pandemic in late December 2020. Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) is a proposed planning area in Raigad district of Maharashtra, an Indian state. City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) has been appointed planning authority for the same. It comprises approximate 170 villages in Pen, Panvel, and Uran talukas of Raigad district. The city will consist of small cities that will be hubs for agro-farming, education, trade, information technology, services, medical treatment, etc. This city is being developed in fulfilment of the conditions under which environmental clearances were given by the Ministry of Environmental & Forest (MoEF), Government of India that development plan for Navi Mumbai be modified to prevent unplanned development in the vicinity of the proposed airport. NAINA enjoys proximity of Navi Mumbai and has influence of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), JNPT and proposed transport corridors viz. Multi Modal Corridor, Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL), Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), SPUR etc.
