The United Opposition [5] was an electoral alliance formed between various opposition parties in India ahead of the 2022 elections in India. [6] [7] [8] The United Opposition was first proposed by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee. [9]

Foundation

To fight against NDA in 2022 Indian presidential election, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, TMC supremo, Mamata Banerjee proposed an electoral alliance. [10]

2022 Presidential elections

The United Opposition nominated Yashwant Sinha, former External Affairs Minister, former Finance Minister, and Trinamool Congress leader, as their presidential candidate for the 2022 Indian presidential election. Later Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and both factions of Shiv Sena (SS) supported the NDA nominated candidate Droupadi Murmu for the presidential election instead. [11] Sinha finished in second place in the elections.

2022 Vice Presidential election

The United Opposition nominated Margaret Alva, former Governor of Uttarakhand and Rajasthan, former Union Minister and Congress leader, as their Vice Presidential candidate for the 2022 Indian Vice Presidential election. However, the leading party of the Opposition, AITC, decided to abstain from voting due to insult of the dignity of the party by other parties as they did not consult or seek consent before declaring a VP candidate. [14] [15] [16] Alva finished in second place in the elections.

Having served multiple times as a Union Cabinet Minister, Mamata Banerjee became the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the first time in 2011. She founded the All India Trinamool Congress in 1998 after separating from the Indian National Congress, and became its second chairperson later in 2001. She is often referred to as Didi.

Its term is five years, unless sooner dissolved.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) is a registered unrecognized political party, that campaigns for the creation of a separate state Gorkhaland within India, out of districts in the north of West Bengal. The party was launched on 7 October 2007. The faction led by Binay Tamang, which was created out of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in 2017, merged into Gurung's GJM in 2021 after Tamang's resignation, following which he joined Trinamool Congress.

Bimal Gurung is an Indian politician and one of the founders and the president of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), a political party demanding the formation of a separate state of Gorkhaland within India. He is the 1st chief executive member of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, which is a semi-autonomous body that governs the hilly areas or Darjeeling District Kalimpong District and the partial terai region in the state of West Bengal.

She is the first person belonging to the tribal community and also the second woman after Pratibha Patil to hold the office. She is also the youngest person to occupy the post and the first President born in an independent India.

Jagdeep Dhankhar is an Indian politician and lawyer, serving as the current Vice President of India since 2022. He previously served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022. He also served as a Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Chandra Shekhar ministry from 1990 to 1991. He was a member of Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991 and later a Member of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from 1993 to 1998. He has also been affiliated with multiple political parties in India, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress and Janata Dal.

The 2022 Indian Presidential election was the 16th presidential election in India held on 18 July 2022 to elect the president of India. The incumbent president Ram Nath Kovind did not run for reelection. The election had a turnout of 99.12%.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2022 Indian vice presidential election</span> Indian vice presidential election

The election for the 14th vice president of India was held on 6 August 2022. The announcement was made by the Election Commission of India. Article 67 of the Constitution of India provides that the vice president of India shall remain in office for a period of five years. The winner of this election is Jagdeep Dhankhar who replaced Venkaiah Naidu as vice president on 11 August 2022. On 16 July 2022, Jagdeep Dhankhar the then serving Governor of West Bengal was nominated as a vice-presidential candidate by the BJP. On 17 July 2022, Margaret Alva was announced as the vice-presidential candidate by the United Progressive Alliance and some non-UPA Parties. Hence, Jagdeep Dhankhar won the election by 528 votes defeating the United Opposition candidate Margaret Alva.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election</span>

Legislative Assembly elections were held in Meghalaya on 27 February 2023 to elect all 60 members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The votes were counted and the results were declared on 2 March 2023.

Nandigram Vidhan Sabha constituency is an assembly constituency in Purba Medinipur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. The General election to the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal for 292 constituencies out of the 294 constituencies in West Bengal was held between 27 March to 29 April 2021 in eight phases. Voting for the two remaining constituencies was delayed and was scheduled to be held on 16 May 2021. Polling in Nandigram took place on 1 April.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">17th West Bengal Assembly</span>

The Seventeenth Legislative Assembly of West Bengal constituted after the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections which were concluded earlier on 29 April 2021 and the results were announced on 2 May 2021. The tenure of West Bengal Legislative Assembly is scheduled to end on 7 May 2026.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Presidency of Droupadi Murmu</span> Indian politician

The presidency of Droupadi Murmu began on 25 July 2022, after she took the oath as the 15th President of India, administered by Chief Justice N. V. Ramana. She was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee and defeated the United Opposition nominee and former Minister of Finance, Yashwant Sinha. Prior to being the presidential nominee, she was the Governor of Jharkhand and a minister in Odisha Government.

The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance is a big tent political alliance of 27 political parties in India led by the Indian National Congress. The alliance is in opposition to the ruling National Democratic Alliance government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 Indian general elections.
