The 1974 Missouri State Auditor election was held on 5 November 1974 in order to elect the state auditor of Missouri. Democratic nominee George W. Lehr defeated Republican nominee and incumbent acting state auditor John Ashcroft. [1]
On election day, 5 November 1974, Democratic nominee George W. Lehr won the election by a margin of 73,291 votes against his opponent Republican nominee John Ashcroft, thereby gaining Democratic control over the office of state auditor. Lehr was sworn in as the 30th state auditor of Missouri on 14 January 1975. [2]

A member of the Republican Party, he later served as Special Counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice from 1999 to 2000 and as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 2004 to 2005.
John David Ashcroft is an American lawyer, lobbyist, and former politician who served as the 79th United States attorney general under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. A Republican from Missouri, Ashcroft represented the state in the United States Senate from 1995 to 2001, and held statewide office as the 29th auditor (1973–1975), 38th attorney general (1976–1985), and 50th governor of Missouri (1985–1993). He later founded The Ashcroft Group, a Washington D.C. lobbying firm.

George Warwick Lehr was an American Democratic politician from Missouri who served as the state auditor from 1975 to 1977. He started his career when in 1963, he was appointed auditor of Jackson County, Missouri. He was later elected as the county executive, becoming the first county executive, replacing the old system of a county judge being executive. He was elected state auditor in 1974, defeating future U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft. Lehr resigned in 1977 to spend more time with his family, including his son who had suffered muscular dystrophy. After leaving office, he was credited with helping to clean the Teamster's pension fund. Lehr developed brain tumors and died in 1988.
