The election was preceded by party primaries on March 3. [2]
Incumbent mayor Francis Slay was challenged for renomination by alderman Irene J. Smith as well as by Denise Coleman.

Francis G. Slay is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 45th Mayor of St. Louis, Missouri from 2001 to 2017. The first mayor of the city of St. Louis to be elected to the office four consecutive times, Slay is the longest-serving mayor in St. Louis history. His fourth term started in April 2013. He announced on April 8, 2016 that he would not seek another term as mayor. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

The 2013 El Paso mayoral election was held on May 11 and June 8, 2013, to elect the Mayor of El Paso, Texas. Incumbent Mayor John Cook could not seek another term due to term limits. In the nonpartisan preliminary round was held on May 11, 2013, businessman Oscar Leeser and City Councilman Steve Ortega placed first and second with 47% and 21% of the vote, respectively, and because no candidate received a majority, a runoff election was held on June 15. Leeser won the runoff election.

Primary elections took place on March 7, 2017, and the general election was held on April 4. Alderwoman Lyda Krewson was elected and became the first female Mayor of St. Louis.

The Saint Louis mayoral election of 2021 occurred in two stages, with an approval voting primary on March 2, 2021, and a two-candidate general election on April 6, 2021. Incumbent Democratic mayor Lyda Krewson was eligible to seek re-election to a second term in office, but chose to retire. In a primary field of four candidates, St. Louis Treasurer Tishaura Jones and Alderwoman Cara Spencer advanced to the general election. Jones narrowly defeated Spencer in the general election, becoming the first African-American woman elected to the office of mayor.
The electoral history of Tishaura Jones spans more than a decade. A member of the Democratic Party, Jones was first elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2008. In 2012, she was elected as Treasurer of St. Louis, a position she has since held through various elections and primaries. Jones ran for Mayor of St. Louis in 2017, but came second to Lyda Krewson in the Democratic primary; Krewson would later win the general election and become the city's first female mayor. In 2020, following her election to a third term as treasurer, Jones announced she would once again run for mayor in the 2021 election, which was the city's first to use approval voting. Jones won that election over St. Louis Alderwoman Cara Spencer and will be the 47th Mayor of St. Louis.
