Datuk Jonathan bin Yasin (born 19 October 1967) is a Malaysian politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ranau since May 2018. He served as the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs II for the second term in the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration under former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former Minister Hamzah Zainuddin from August 2021 to the collapse of the BN administration in November 2022 and the first term in Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration under former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former Minister Hamzah from March 2020 to the collapse of the PN administration in August 2021. He is a direct member of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition. He joined the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU),a component party of the PN coalition after resigning from the People's Justice Party (PKR),a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. He later resigned from BERSATU but remained in GRS as direct member. [1]
In the 2008 election,Jonathan under his party of People's Justice Party (PKR) faced Siringan Gubat of the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) and lost in a large majority. [2]
In the 2013 election,Jonathan faced a new candidate Ewon Ebin of UPKO but losing again the parliamentary seat. [3]
In the 2018 election,his party of PKR field him to contest the Ranau parliamentary seat again, [4] [5] facing the seat defending candidate Ewon Ebin from UPKO and subsequently won. [6] [7]
In 2013,Jonathan as a PKR member post a picture of Anwar Ibrahim being awarded the "Huguan Siou" (Paramount Leader of the Kadazan-Dusuns) in his Facebook account. [8] This subsequently leading to furore among Kadazan-Dusun community in Sabah as the title is "sacred" and should only be used among the ethnic indigenous community,not for a country title. [9] The Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) also demanded apologies from him and Anwar. [10] Responding to the criticism,Jonathan said "Who am I to stop any Kadazan-Dusun individual from enthroning any person as 'Huguan Siou' Malaysia?". [11] Anwar however denied that he was bestowed the honour. [9]

Kadazandusun are the largest ethnic group in Sabah,Malaysia,an amalgamation of the closely related indigenous Kadazan and Dusun peoples. "Kadazandusun" is an umbrella term that encompasses both the Kadazan and Dusun peoples. They are also known as Mamasok Sabah,meaning "indigenous people of Sabah". Kadazandusun tradition holds that they are the descendants of Nunuk Ragang. Kadazandusun is recognised as an indigenous nation of Borneo with documented heritage by the United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 2004. Kadazandusuns are part of the bumiputera in Malaysia having been endowed with rights concerning land,rivers,education and maintaining their own customary laws.
Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan is a Malaysian politician who served as the 7th Chief Minister of Sabah from April 1985 to March 1994 and Member of Parliament (MP) for Keningau from August 1986 to May 2018. He is founding President of the United Sabah Party (PBS) and brother of Jeffrey Kitingan,the Deputy Chief Minister II and State Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries of Sabah and President of Homeland Solidarity Party (STAR) as well as uncle of Maximus Ongkili,the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Sabah and Sarawak affairs and President of PBS. Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan(born 22 October 1948,also known as DDJK or DSPDJK since 2021) is Malaysian politician who has served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah I since January 2023 and State Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries of Sabah for the second term since September 2020. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah II from October 2020 to his promotion in January 2023 and the first term in the position in May 2018. In January 2023,he was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister I of Sabah succeeding Bung Mokhtar,who was dropped due to a political crisis. At the federal level,he served as the Deputy Minister of Tourism,Arts and Culture from March 2020 to his resignation in September 2020 and Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government from August 1994 to May 1995. He has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Keningau since May 2018,Member of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Tambunan since May 2018 and Bingkor from 1994 to 2004 and again from May 2013 to May 2018. The United Pasok Nunukragang National Organisation was a regional political party in Malaysia based in the state of Sabah. It was established in 1978. Before its deregistration,it was the oldest political party in Sabah that was currently still in existence. The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation is a multiracial political party based in Sabah,Malaysia. The party was rebranded from its previous party's name,United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation using the same UPKO acronym;which was a widely known Kadazan-Dusun-Murut based party in 2019. The party had earlier been renamed once before in 1999 from its initial 1994 formation name of Sabah Democratic Party. In August 2021,UPKO has officially joined the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition as a component party. It is one of the four component parties of the Pakatan Harapan ruling coalition in Malaysia.
United Pasok Momogun Organisation is an ethnically-based political party in North Borneo. It was a splinter party of United National Kadazan Organisation (UNKO);founded by Donald Stephens earlier in 1961. The breakaway UPMO formed by Orang Kaya Kaya (OKK) Datuk G.S. Sundang,in January 1962 to fight for the interest of Kadazan-Dusun-Murut (KDM) races;with the supports and encouragement of the Chinese in Sabah. The split was in reaction and protest to the suggestion of the Prime Minister of Malaya,Tunku Abdul Rahman to create a new federation country named Malaysia,dubbed Projek Malaysia.

Ewon Benedick is a Malaysian politician who has served as Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development in the Anwar Ibrahim Cabinet since December 2022,the Member of Parliament (MP) for Penampang since November 2022 and Member of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Kadamaian since May 2018. He served as State Minister of Rural Development of Sabah in the Sabah Heritage Party (WARISAN) administration under former Chief Minister Shafie Apdal from May 2018 to the collapse of the WARISAN state administration in September 2020. He is a member of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO),a component party of the PH coalition. He has served as the 3rd President of UPKO since January 2023. He was also Vice President of UPKO before his promotion to the party presidency in January 2023. He is one of the two UPKO MPs and sole UPKO MLA. He was set to officially take over Wilfred Madius Tangau as the 3rd UPKO president after the UPKO party election in the party triennial delegates convention on 16 October 2022. However on 10 October 2022,the 14th Parliament was dissolved and the 2022 general election was to be held on 19 November 2022,the convention was delayed to 15 January 2023.
Datuk Abidin bin Madingkir is a Malaysian politician who has served as the State Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) state administration under Chief Minister Hajiji Noor since October 2020 as well as Member of Sabah State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Paginatan since May 2018. He is a member of the Homeland Solidarity Party (STAR) a component party of the GRS and formerly Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalitions and was a member of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO),a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and formerly Barisan Nasional (BN) coalitions. He is also the former Mayor of Kota Kinabalu City Hall and the first from Ranau have this position.

He is an ethnic Bisayan,a sub-ethnic group or tribe of the indigenous Kadazan-Dusun population native to Beaufort and Kuala Penyu districts located in the southern part of Sabah.
The 2023 Sabah political crisis or widely reported on local media as Langkah Kinabalu or the Kinabalu Move,began on 6 January 2023,when the state government of Sabah led by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) collapsed when its coalition party Barisan Nasional (BN) withdrew its support. The Leader of UMNO Sabah,a component party of BN,Bung Moktar Radin,Kinabatangan Member of Parliament (MP) and Lamag Assemblyman,cited a lack of confidence in the leadership of Chief Minister of Sabah Hajiji Noor in the withdrawal. UMNO Sabah want to change support from supporting GRS coalition to supporting the WARISAN Plus coalition. On 9 January,both Malaysian leaders,prime minister Anwar Ibrahim and deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi travelled to Kota Kinabalu to meet with Sabah political leaders. This crisis resulted in the approval of the Anti-Switching Parties Law in Sabah (approved in 25 May 2023).
In the Ranau parliamentary seat, Barisan's Datuk Ewon Ebin of Upko received 15,434 votes, Jonathan Yasin of PKR and the brother of Amisah got 11,823 votes, Julianah Situn @Widya Julia of Sabah Star 2,559 and Yazid Sahjinan, an independent, 914.
