This is a list of the first-level administrative divisions of the People's Republic of China (PRC), including all provinces (except the claimed Taiwan Province), autonomous regions, special administrative regions, and municipalities, in order of their total land area as reported by the national or provincial-level government.

Notes

  1. Heilongjiang's officially reported area of 473,000 square kilometres (183,000 sq mi) [7] explicitly includes parts of Inner Mongolia's Oroqen Autonomous Banner administered as Songling District and Jiagedaqi District under Heilongjiang's Daxing'anling Prefecture. The combined area of these two districts is 18,200 square kilometres (7,000 sq mi), [8] which has been subtracted from Heilongjiang's reported area to arrive at the figure of 454,800 square kilometres (175,600 sq mi) reported in the table and corroborated by ref. 6.
  2. Figure is the sum of the areas of the listed administrative divisions, rounded to the nearest hundred square kilometres. The National Bureau of Statistics of China gives China's total land area as 9.6 million square kilometres. [36] The United Nations Statistics Division reports China's land area excluding Hong Kong and Macau as 9.5970 million square kilometres. [37]

Qiqihar Prefecture-level city in Heilongjiang, Peoples Republic of China

Qiqihar is the second-largest city in the Heilongjiang province of China, in the west central part of the province. The built-up area made up of Longsha, Tiefeng and Jianhua districts had 959,787 inhabitants, while the total population of the prefecture-level city was shrinking to 4,067,489 as of the 2020 census. These are mainly Han Chinese, though the city is also home to thirty-four minorities including Manchus, Daur, and Mongols.

Jixi Prefecture-level city in Heilongjiang, Peoples Republic of China

Jixi is a city in southeastern Heilongjiang Province, People's Republic of China. At the 2020 census, 1,502,060 people resided within its administrative area of 22,488.47 square kilometres (8,682.85 sq mi) and 560,118 in its built-up area made up of 3 out of 6 urban districts. Jixi is on the Muling River about 30 km (19 mi) from the border with Russia's Primorsky Krai and 120 km (75 mi) from Lake Xingkai. The mayor of Jixi is Zhang Changrong (张常荣) since June 2015. The area is one of the important coal mining bases in China. A crater on asteroid 253 Mathilde was named after the city.

Qitaihe Prefecture-level city in Heilongjiang, Peoples Republic of China

Qitaihe is a prefecture-level city in eastern Heilongjiang province, People's Republic of China. Covering an area 6,223 km2 (2,403 sq mi), it is geographically the smallest prefecture-level division of the province. Qitaihe also has the second smallest population of the cities in Heilongjiang. At the 2010 census, its total population was 920,419, while 620,935 live in the built up area made of 3 urban districts.

Jiaohe, Jilin County-level city in Jilin, Peoples Republic of China

Jiaohe is a middle-sized county-level city in east-central Jilin province, People's Republic of China, bordering Heilongjiang to the northeast. It is under the administration of Jilin City, 65 kilometres (40 mi) to the west, and it is well known for its production of tobacco. The mayor of the city is Wang Gang (王钢).

Ewenki Autonomous Banner Autonomous banner in Inner Mongolia, Peoples Republic of China

Ewenki Autonomous Banner is an autonomous banner that lies on the border between northwestern Greater Khingan and Hulun Buir grasslands and directly south of the urban district of Hailar in the prefecture-level city of Hulunbuir, People's Republic of China. The autonomous banner has an area of 19,111 km2 (7,379 sq mi), and a population of 136,832 as of 2019. The banner's seat of government is the town of Bayan Tohoi. The most populous town in the banner is Dayan, which was once Dayan Mining Area as an administrative division and is now the main part of an industrial district also named Dayan Mining Area, has an area of 443 square kilometres (171 sq mi) and a population of about 73,000.

Xifeng District County in Gansu, Peoples Republic of China

Xifeng District is a district and the seat of the city of Qingyang in Gansu Province, China. It has an area of 996 km2 (385 sq mi) and a population of 376,800 in 2019.

Mangshi County-level city in Yunnan, Peoples Republic of China

Mangshi, former name Luxi (潞西), is a county-level city and the seat of Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, western Yunnan province, China. Mangshi has an area of 2,900.91 km2 (1,120.05 sq mi), with an urban area of 18.66 km2 (7.20 sq mi). Han Chinese, Dai people and Jingpo people are the major ethnic groups. Luxi County was founded in 1949, and became a county-level city in 1996.

Zunhua County-level city in Hebei, Peoples Republic of China

Zunhua is a county-level city in the northeast of Hebei province, China, bordering Tianjin to the west. It is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Tangshan. Historic sites include the Eastern Qing Tombs.

Wuqi County County in Shaanxi, Peoples Republic of China

Wuqi County is a county under the jurisdiction of Yan'an City, in the northwest of Shaanxi Province, China, bordering Gansu province to the southwest. The county spans an area of 3,788.5 square kilometres (1,462.7 sq mi), and has a population of 145,600 as of 2012.

Aihui District District in Heilongjiang, Peoples Republic of China

Aihui District, formerly known as Aihui, Aihun, Aihu, and Aihu, is an administrative district and the seat of the prefecture-level city of Heihe, Heilongjiang Province, China. It is located on the right (south-western) bank of the Amur River, across which is Blagoveshchensk, Amur Oblast, Russia. Aihui District spans an area of 1,443 km2 (557 sq mi), and had a population of 192,764 as of 2000.

Xian District, Mudanjiang District in Heilongjiang, Peoples Republic of China

Xi'an District is a district of the city of Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province, China. Spanning an area of 445 square kilometres (172 sq mi) in area, the district makes up the southwest portion of Mudanjiang's urban area. Xi'an District is notable for its large Korean community, and is home to more than 24,000 Koreans.

Jiuzhaigou County County in Sichuan, Peoples Republic of China

Jiuzhaigou County is a county of Sichuan Province, China. It is under the administration of the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. Formerly called Nanping County, it was renamed in 1998 to reflect the fact that the Jiuzhaigou Valley is located within its administration. The county seat, Nanping, was created in 2013 by the merger of Yongle Town (永乐镇), Yongfeng Township (永丰乡), and Anle Township (安乐乡).

Hejian County-level city in Hebei, Peoples Republic of China

Hejian is a county-level city under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Cangzhou, in the east-central part of Hebei province, China. As of 2017, the population was ca. 895,000 inhabitants and the city territory was 1,333 km2 (515 sq mi). Hejian is situated along China National Highway 106.

Ergun City County-level city in Inner Mongolia, Peoples Republic of China

Ergun, formerly Ergun Right Banner, is a county-level city in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, containing the autonomous region's northernmost point. The city has an area of 28,958 square kilometres (11,181 sq mi), and a population of 79,155 as of the 2019.

Jianghan District District in Hubei, Peoples Republic of China

Jianghan District forms part of the urban core of and is one of 13 urban districts of the prefecture-level city of Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, China. The district is part of the historical Hankou.

Yicheng County County in Shanxi, Peoples Republic of China

Yicheng County is a county in the prefecture-level city of Linfen, in the south of Shanxi Province, China. The county spans an area of 1,168 square kilometres, and is home to 323,517 people as of 2019.

Daning County is a county in the southwest of Shanxi province, China, bordering Shaanxi province to the west. It is under the administration of Linfen.

Fenxi County is a county of Shanxi province, China. It is under the administration of Linfen city. The county spans an area of 880 square kilometres (340 sq mi), and has a permanent population of 150,522 as of 2019.

Qianxi County is a county of Hebei province, China. It contains the northernmost point of Tangshan City which administers it.
