The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation is a private foundation formed in 1925 by Olga and Simon Guggenheim in memory of their son, who died on April 26, 1922. The organization awards Guggenheim Fellowships to professionals who have demonstrated exceptional ability by publishing a significant body of work in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and the creative arts, excluding the performing arts.

Guggenheim Fellowships are grants that have been awarded annually since 1925 by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, endowed by the late Simon and Olga Hirsh Guggenheim. These awards are bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated distinguished accomplishment in the past and potential for future achievement. The recipients exhibit outstanding aptitude for prolific scholarship or exceptional talent in the arts.

Stacy Madeleine Schiff is an American former editor, essayist, and author of five biographies. Her biography of Véra Nabokov won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in biography. Schiff has also written biographies of French aviator and author of The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, colonial American-era polymath and prime mover of America's founding, Benjamin Franklin, Franklin's fellow Founding Father Samuel Adams, ancient Egyptian queen Cleopatra, and the important figures and events of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692–93 in colonial Massachusetts.

Thomas Cleveland Holt is an American historian, who is the James Westfall Thompson Professor of American and African American History at the University of Chicago. He has produced a number of works on the people and descendants of the African Diaspora. He served as president of the American Historical Association in 1994.

Wu Cheng-wen is a Taiwanese biochemist. He is the former founding president of National Health Research Institutes in 1996–2005.

Charles O. Jones was an American political scientist who was a non-resident senior fellow at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. He was a graduate of the University of South Dakota and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Guggenheim fellow. He was a leading scholar of American politics. He was also a non-resident senior fellow in the Governmental Studies program at The Brookings Institution. Jones wrote or edited 18 books and contributed over 100 articles and book chapters. He died on January 3, 2024, at the age of 92.

Helen Moore Johnson was a Guggenheim Fellow (1927) appointed for research in Jainism. Her work includes the English translation of the hagiographical work Trishashti Shalaka Purusha in six volumes. She published several articles in Journal of the American Oriental Society, American Journal of Philology.
