Several UP alumni and faculty members have been named as National Scientists of the Philippines. This is the highest award accorded to Filipino scientists by the Philippine government.
The University of the Philippines Diliman, also referred to as UP Diliman or simply University of the Philippines (UP), is a public, coeducational, research university located in Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines. It was established on February 12, 1949, as the flagship campus and seat of administration of the University of the Philippines System, the national university of the Philippines.
José Abad Santos y Basco was the fifth chief justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He briefly served as the acting president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines and acting commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines during World War II, from March 1942 until his execution. Japanese forces killed him for refusing to cooperate during their occupation of the country.
The Upsilon Sigma Phi (ΥΣΦ) is the oldest Greek-letter organization and fraternity in Asia. Founded in 1918, it is also the oldest student organization in continuous existence in the University of the Philippines. It has two chapters—a single chapter for the UP Diliman and the UP Manila campuses, and another for the UP Los Baños. Membership remains exclusive to UP students, and is by invitation only.
The Sigma Rho Fraternity (ΣΡ) is a College of Law-based fraternity in the University of the Philippines Diliman. Having been formally organized in 1938, it is the oldest law-based Greek-letter fraternity in Asia. However, it has also expanded its membership base to include undergraduate students, including those studying for degrees in engineering, business, and sports science. It is one of the three fraternities based in the College of Law, the other two being Alpha Phi Beta and Scintilla Juris.
Conrado Benitez was a Filipino statesman, writer, and educator. He founded the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement and was one of the drafters of the 1935 Constitution of the Philippines.
Estanislao Arceta Fernandez Jr. was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. In college, he distinguished himself as a debater and orator. In the practice of law, he earned wide reputation for championing "lost cases", including a criminal case in Supreme Court of the United States.
The Alpha Phi BetaFraternity is a fraternity based in the University of the Philippines College of Law with no recognized chapters outside University of the Philippines Diliman. The fraternity's membership hails from the College of Law and from pre-law colleges in the campus. 2019 marked the fraternity's 80th Anniversary. It is one of the three fraternities based in the college, the other two being Sigma Rho fraternity and Scintilla Juris.
Jose Campana Campos, Jr. was a Filipino lawyer who served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines from September 3, 1992, to April 8, 1993. He was appointed by President Corazon Aquino.
Nestor B. Alampay Sr. was a former associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He was sworn in as a member of the Supreme Court by President Ferdinand Marcos on January 24, 1985, was reappointed by President Corazon Aquino in 1986, and served until his retirement on March 17, 1987.
