List of exoplanets discovered in 2016

Last updated

This is a list of exoplanets discovered in 2016. As of 2024, 2016 was the year with the most discoveries of exoplanets.

Contents

For exoplanets detected only by radial velocity, the mass value is actually a lower limit. (See Minimum mass for more information)

Excluded objects

The majority of exoplanet discoveries in 2016 were from a paper by Morton et al. that statistically validated over 1,000 Kepler planets. [61] This statistical validation did not involve mass measurements, and some transiting objects validated as planets were later shown (or even previously known) to be small stars. Such cases include Kepler-469 (KOI-126), [96] Kepler-470 (KOI-129), [97] Kepler-486 (KOI-189), [98] Kepler-488 (KOI-194), [99] Kepler-503 (KOI-242), [100] Kepler-628 (KOI-631), [101] Kepler-699 (KOI-846), [63] Kepler-706 (KOI-855), [101] Kepler-807 (KOI-1288), [101] Kepler-840 (KOI-1416), [63] and Kepler-854 (KOI-1450). [63] In another two cases, Kepler-492 (KOI-205) [102] and Kepler-494 (KOI-219), [101] the companions are brown dwarfs with masses about 40 times that of Jupiter.

The Hungarian Automated Telescope Network (HATNet) project is a network of six small fully automated "HAT" telescopes. The scientific goal of the project is to detect and characterize extrasolar planets using the transit method. This network is used also to find and follow bright variable stars. The network is maintained by the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian.

WASP-4b is an exoplanet, specifically a hot Jupiter, approximately 891 light-years away in the constellation of Phoenix.

K2-3, also known as EPIC 201367065, is a red dwarf star with three known planets. It is on the borderline of being a late orange dwarf/K-type star, but because of its temperature, it is classified as a red dwarf.

GJ 9827 is a star in the constellation of Pisces. It is a K-type main-sequence star with an apparent magnitude of 10.250. It is 97 light-years away, based on parallax.

HD 179070 Star in the constellation Lyra

HD 179070, also known as Kepler-21, is a star with a closely orbiting exoplanet in the northern constellation of Lyra. At an apparent visual magnitude of 8.25 this was the brightest star observed by the Kepler spacecraft to host a validated planet until the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting HD 212657 in 2018. This system is located at a distance of 354 light-years from the Sun based on parallax measurements, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −18.2 km/s.

WASP-72 is the primary of a binary star system. It is an F7 class dwarf star, with an internal structure just on the verge of the Kraft break. It is orbited by a planet WASP-72b. The age of WASP-72 is younger than the Sun at 3.55±0.82 billion years.

WASP-75 is a F-type main-sequence star about 980 light-years away. The star is much younger than the Sun at approximately 2.9±0.2 billion years. WASP-75 is similar to the Sun in its concentration of heavy elements.
