This is a list of vice presidents of India by longevity. The table includes date of swearing-in of the vice presidents, date when he left the office, age at swearing-in, age when leaving office, post vice presidency time-span, and age at death/current age.
The median age at swearing-in of Indian vice presidents is 70 years, 40 days. Mohammad Hamid Ansari is closest to this mean age. Ramaswamy Venkataraman was the longest lived vice president in Indian history, living 98 years, 54 days until his death in 2009, [1] while Zakir Husain lived the shortest life of all Indian vice presidents, of 72 years, 84 days until his death in 1969. [2]
B. D. Jatti was the youngest elected vice president, at age of 61 years, 355 days, [3] while Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was the oldest elected vice president, at the age of 76 years, 300 days. [4] B. D. Jatti also had the longest retirement period of any vice president, living 22 years, 280 days after leaving office, while Zakir Husain also had the shortest retirement period of 1 year, 355 days. Krishan Kant was the only vice president to ever die in office. [5]
Only two of the vice presidents, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Mohammad Hamid Ansari [6] [7] were re-elected vice presidents, serving 2 terms. Zakir Husain and B. D. Jatti were younger than two of their immediate successors, on the other extreme, V. V. Giri and Mohammad Hidayatullah were older than their predecessors.
Of all the vice presidents, six immediately succeeded to the Presidency by winning the presidential election. They were Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Zakir Husain, V. V. Giri, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma and K. R. Narayanan. While, V. V. Giri [8] and B. D. Jatti [9] also served as acting president upon death of the president. [10]

The Rajya Sabha or Council of States is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of India. As of 2021 it has a maximum membership of 245, of which 233 are elected by the legislatures of the states and union territories using single transferable votes through Open Ballot while the President can appoint 12 members for their contributions to art, literature, science, and social services. The potential seating capacity of the Rajya Sabha is 250, according to article 80 of the Indian Constitution. Members sit for staggered terms lasting six years, with elections every year with about a third of the 233 designates up for election every two years, in even-numbered years. The Rajya Sabha meets in continuous sessions, and unlike the Lok Sabha, being the lower house of the Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper house of Parliament, is not subjected to dissolution. However, the Rajya Sabha, like the Lok Sabha can be prorogued by the President.
Varahagiri Venkata Giri was the fourth president of India from 24 August 1969 to 24 August 1974. He was the only president to be elected as an independent candidate. He was succeeded by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as president in 1974. After the end of his full term, Giri was honoured by the Government of India with the Bharat Ratna in 1975. Giri died on 24 June 1980.
Zakir Husain Khan was an Indian economist and politician who served as the third president of India, from 13 May 1967 until his death on 3 May 1969.
Mohammad Hamid Ansari is an Indian politician and retired Foreign service officer who was the 12th chairman of Rajya Sabha and 12th vice president of India from 2007 to 2017.
Vijay J. Darda is a politician from Indian National Congress party, and a Member of the Parliament of India representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha since 1998, having been elected for three consecutive terms into the upper house of the Indian Parliament.He is the chairman of the Lokmat Media Group. Darda is also the President of the Akhil Bhartiya Sakal Jain Samaj. Darda was President of Indian Newspaper Society, New Delhi from 1997 to 1998. He continues to be a member of its executive committee.
The Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha is the leader and parliamentary chairperson of the majority party in the Rajya Sabha and is normally either a cabinet minister or another nominated minister. The Leader of the House is responsible for organizing government meetings and business in the House. This office is not enshrined in the constitution and provided under the Rules of Rajya Sabha.

Kalanjoor Narayana Panicker Balagopal is an Indian Politician belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), who is serving as the Minister for Finance,, Government of Kerala and Member of Legislative Assembly representing Kottarakkara. Dukhan Ram (1899–1990) was an Indian ophthalmologist, academic, legislator and the vice chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University. He was the principal of Patna Medical College, one of the oldest medical colleges in India, and the president of Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Sabha, a satellite organization of Arya Samaj, founded by Dayanand Saraswati. He successfully contested the 1962 Bihar Legislative Assembly election from Sasaram constituency, on Indian National Congress candidature and served as the president of All India Ophthalmological Society in 1961. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1962, for his contributions to medical science.
The spouse of the vice president of India serves as a Hostess of Uparashtrapati Bhavan. She do not have any official roles or duties. Since 2017, the spouse to the incumbent vice president is Usha V. Naidu.
