The Muscoot Reservoir is a reservoir in the New York City water supply system in northern Westchester County, New York, located directly north of the village of Katonah. Part of the system's Croton Watershed, it is 25 miles (40 kilometres) north of the City. [2]
The reservoir was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. It was formed by impounding both the Muscoot River, a tributary of the Croton River, and the Croton River proper, a tributary of the Hudson River. Empounded water from the New Croton Reservoir flows through the New Croton Aqueduct into the Bronx for distribution in New York City. [3]
The reservoir was completed in 1905. [2]
During construction, the New York Central Railroad moved Bridge L-158 from the Rondout Creek near Kingston to carry its Mahopac Branch across a section of the reservoir near Goldens Bridge.[ citation needed ] It remains today although service on the branch ended in 1960.
In 1978, Bridge L-158 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the only remaining double-intersection Whipple truss railroad bridge in the state.[ citation needed ]
The reservoir was once much smaller, but the other side of the original dam was intentionally flooded to make the reservoir bigger, when[ when? ] a new dam was built downstream. The original dam is still standing, and divides the reservoir in two.[ citation needed ]
The reservoir serves as the first main collecting point for all the reservoirs in the Croton Watershed. It is almost 8 miles (13 km) long, can hold up to 4.9 billion US gallons (19,000,000 cubic metres ; 19 billion litres ) of water at full capacity, and has a 76-square-mile (197 km2) drainage basin. Water from the Muscoot Reservoir flows into the New Croton Reservoir. From there it enters the New Croton Aqueduct and flows south into the Jerome Park Reservoir in The Bronx. [2] Water from the Croton Aqueduct is distributed within the city to parts of The Bronx, Manhattan, and western Queens.[ citation needed ]
Fish species found in the reservoir include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, brown bullhead, common carp, black crappie, yellow perch, chain pickerel, sunfish, brown trout, and rainbow trout. [1]

The Kensico Reservoir is a reservoir spanning the towns of Armonk and Valhalla, New York, located 3 miles north of White Plains. It was formed by the original earth and gravel Kensico Dam constructed in 1885, which impounded waters from the Bronx and Byram rivers. The Amawalk Reservoir is a small reservoir in the New York City water supply system located in central-northern Westchester County, New York. It is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 202 and New York State Route 35 in the town of Somers, and is over 32 miles north of New York City. Part of the system's Croton Watershed, it was formed by impounding the middle of the Muscoot River, one of the tributaries of the Croton River. This reservoir was put into service in 1897, and was named after the original community of Amawalk, New York, which was inundated by the reservoir and relocated near the dam.
The Bog Brook Reservoir is a 379-acre (153 ha) reservoir in the Croton Watershed in southern New York State, part of the New York City water supply system. It is located in the town of Southeast in Putnam County, approximately 38 miles (61 km) north of New York City. It was formed by the damming of Bog Brook, a small tributary of the East Branch of the Croton River. The reservoir was put into service in 1892, making it one of the older in the system.

Lake Shenorock is a lake located in the hamlet of Shenorock in the town of Somers, New York. The lake is used for fishing and was used for recreational swimming until the Clean Water Act was passed and the lake became a source of drinking water. The Clean Water Act was passed in 1972, recreational swimming ended in 1977. The lake is part of the Croton Reservoir System and is a tributary to the Amawalk Reservoir, which is used as a source of water for New York City residents. There are no major tributaries to the class B lake.
Kirk Lake is a controlled lake in the hamlet of Mahopac in the town of Carmel in Putnam County, New York. It lies due west and sharply below considerably larger Lake Mahopac. It is one of three controlled lakes in the New York City water supply system's Croton Watershed.

The Muscoot River is a short tributary of the Croton River in Putnam and Westchester counties in the state of New York. Approximately 6 mi (9.7 km) long and running north-to-south, it lies within the Croton River watershed and is part of the New York City water supply system's Croton Watershed.
