Riverview is a suburb of Ipswich in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. [2] In the 2016 census, Riverview had a population of 3,073 people and an unemployment rate of 15.7%, compared to the Australian unemployment rate of 6.9%. [1]

Geography

Riverview is approximately 31 kilometres (19 mi) from Brisbane CBD. It is bounded to the north-east by the Brisbane River. [3]

The Ipswich Motorway passes through the suburb from east (Redbank) to south-west (Dinmore). The Main Line railway from Brisbane to Ipswich and beyond also passes through the suburb from east (Redband) to south-west (Dinmore) to the north of the motorway. The suburb is served by Riverview railway station on Station Road ( 27°35′42″S152°51′02″E / 27.5950°S 152.8506°E / -27.5950; 152.8506 (Riverview railway station) ). [3] [4]

History

The suburb takes its name from its railway station, which in turn was named for views of the Brisbane River from the railway station. [2] [4]

St. Andrew's Anglican church at 33 Brisbane Road ( 27°35′52″S152°50′57″E / 27.5977°S 152.8492°E / -27.5977; 152.8492 (St Andrew's Anglican Church) ) was dedicated on 14 April 1956 by Reverend Kestell Cornish, Rector Parish of Ipswich. [5] [6] Its closure was approved in September 1992. [7]

St Peter Claver College opened on 5 August 1976. [8]

Riverview State School opened on 24 January 1977. [8] In the 2016 census, Riverview had a population of 3,073 people. [1]

Transport

Riverview railway station provides access to regular Queensland Rail City network services to Brisbane CBD, Ipswich and Rosewood via Ipswich. [4]

The Moggill Ferry is a vehicular ferry service across the Brisbane River from Moggill Road, Moggill in the City of Brisbane ( 27°35′41″S152°51′26″E / 27.5947°S 152.8572°E / -27.5947; 152.8572 (Moggill Ferry terminal (Moggill)) ) to Moggill Ferry Road at Riverview ( 27°35′41″S152°51′20″E / 27.5948°S 152.8555°E / -27.5948; 152.8555 (Moggill Ferry terminal (Riverview)) ). The ferry operates on an "on demand" basis and takes 3 minutes to cross. [9] [10]

Education

Riverview State School is a government primary (Prep-6) school for boys and girls at 131 Old Ipswich Road ( 27°36′12″S152°50′49″E / 27.6032°S 152.8469°E / -27.6032; 152.8469 (Riverview State School) ). [11] [12] In 2018, the school had an enrolment of 289 students with 25 teachers (23 full-time equivalent) and 18 non-teaching staff (12 full-time equivalent). [13] It includes a special education program. [11]

St Peter Claver College is a Catholic secondary (7-12) school for boys and girls at 10 Old Ipswich Road ( 27°35′57″S152°50′16″E / 27.5993°S 152.8379°E / -27.5993; 152.8379 (St Peter Claver College) ). [11] [14] In 2018, the school had an enrolment of 967 students with 80 teachers (78 full-time equivalent) and 43 non-teaching staff (36 full-time equivalent). [13]

The nearest government secondary schools are Bundamba State Secondary College in neighbouring Bundamba to the east and Redbank Plains State High School in Redbank Plains to the south. [3]

Moggill Ferry

The Moggill Ferry is a cable ferry crossing the Brisbane River between the suburbs of Moggill in Brisbane and Riverview in Ipswich, both in Queensland, Australia. The iconic ferry is owned by Stradbroke Ferries and can carry up to 20 vehicles per crossing.

Redbank-Bundamba Loop Line and The Swanbank Extension

The Redbank-Bundamba Loop Line was a branch line off the Main Line railway near Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built to convey coal from the Bundamba and Redbank areas of the Ipswich coalfields. The Redbank-Bundamba Loop Line ran generally south-west from Redbank station to a point near Bundamba Creek called Box Flat Junction and from that point generally north along Bundamba Creek to Bundamba station.
