Events in the year 2021 in Japan.

The second year was largely defined by COVID-19 pandemic that caused the national economy to go into recession, and would continue until October 1, 2021 (when the fourth state of emergency ends).

Politically, Liberal Democratic Party leader Fumio Kishida was officially elected as 100th Prime Minister of Japan on October 4, 2021 after winning a majority of votes in both houses of parliament. The new cabinet members under Kishida, who succeeds Yoshihide Suga than one year of Shinzo Abe, are likely due to be announced later in the day.[ citation needed ]

Toshihide Maskawa, Nobel Prize-winning Japanese theoretical physicist, has died of oral cancer on the same day as the opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics. He was 81 years old.

In the third year of Reiwa Memoriam despite Japanese demographic and aging crisis, and with COVID-19 pandemic in the country, among top 20 famous Japanese people who passed away peacefully due to illness and old age, including Seizō Fukumoto, Tochinoumi Teruyoshi, Shūichirō Moriyama, Isamu Akasaki, Masakazu Tamura, Osamu Kobayashi, Shunsuke Kikuchi, Takashi Tachibana, Ei-ichi Negishi, Takeshi Terauchi, Toshihide Maskawa, Jerry Fujio, Shinichiro Sawai, Wataru Takeshita, Takao Saito, Koichi Sugiyama, Mayumi Moriyama, Toshihiro Iijima, and Princess Kiko's father Tatsuhiko Kawashima. While unfortunately, among other famous Japanese people who died of tragic events, including Toshiro Kandagawa, Kōbō Kenichi, and Sonny Chiba from COVID-19 infections, and Sayaka Kanda from suicide.

Yoshihide Suga is a Japanese politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from 2020 to 2021. A member of the Liberal Democratic Party, he has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2003, representing Hyogo's 9th district.

He is also a member of the House of Representatives representing Kanagawa's 15th district since 1996.

Shinjirō Koizumi is a Japanese politician who served as the Minister of the Environment from September 2019 to October 2021. He also serves as a Member of the House of Representatives for the Liberal Democratic Party. He is the second son of former Prime Minister Junichirō Koizumi and the younger brother of actor Kotaro Koizumi.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 Japanese general election</span>

General elections were held in Japan on 31 October 2021, as required by the constitution. Voting took place in all constituencies in order to elect members to the House of Representatives, the lower house of the National Diet. As the constitution requires the cabinet to resign in the first Diet session after a general election, the elections will also lead to a new election for Prime Minister in the Diet, and the appointment of a new cabinet, although ministers may be re-appointed. The election was the first general election of the Reiwa era.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Reiwa era</span> Era of Japanese history (since 2019)

Reiwa is the current and 232nd era of the official calendar of Japan. It began on 1 May 2019, the day on which Emperor Akihito's eldest son, Naruhito, ascended the throne as the 126th Emperor of Japan. The day before, Emperor Akihito abdicated the Chrysanthemum Throne, marking the end of the Heisei era. The year 2019 corresponds with Heisei 31 from 1 January to 30 April, and with Reiwa 1 from 1 May. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan explained the meaning of Reiwa to be "beautiful harmony".

The 2020 Liberal Democratic Party of Japan presidential election was triggered by Shinzo Abe's announcement on 28 August 2020 that he would resign as President of the Liberal Democratic Party and Prime Minister of Japan, citing a relapse of his colitis. Voting took place on 14 September 2020 to elect the next president of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, three days before the National Diet was scheduled to hold a session to elect the new prime minister. Initially scheduled to be held in September 2021, incumbent LDP president and the longest-serving Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, suddenly resigned on 28 August 2020, citing recent health concerns, prompting an election to select the President to serve the rest of Abe's term.

The Suga Cabinet governed Japan under the leadership of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga from 16 September 2020 to 4 October 2021. The government was a coalition between the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komeito and controlled both the upper and lower houses of the National Diet.
