American Meditation Institute

Last updated

The American Meditation Institute (AMI) was founded by Leonard Perlmutter (Ram Lev) and Jenness Cortez Perlmutter in 1996. The Perlmutters were influenced by Eknath Easwaran and Nisargadatta Maharaj; they were direct disciples of Swami Rama [1] of the Himalaya Mountains, the man who, in laboratory conditions and under the observation of research scientists at the Menninger Clinic, [2] demonstrated that blood pressure, heart rate, and the autonomic nervous system can be voluntarily controlled. [3] These research demonstrations have been one of the major cornerstones of the mind-body movement since the 1970s. [4]

AMI is located on 5 acres (2.0 ha) in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains just east of Albany, New York. AMI offers a full range of education programs including a yoga therapist certification program, weekly classes, and weekend retreats on the practical application of yoga science as holistic mind-body medicine.

As a non-profit educational organization, the American Meditation Institute describes its mission as “to provide safe, effective practices for achieving optimal wellness and longevity for the general public, medical doctors and other healthcare professionals.” Courses include meditation, breathing, gentle yoga, nutrition, mind function optimization, chakra balancing techniques, kitchen yoga (food as medicine), Ayurveda, Tantra healing, the teachings of the Buddha, and a computer distance learning course on the psychology of the Bhagavad Gita.

In addition, the American Meditation Institute publishes a variety of media through AMI Publishers, including the magazine Transformation, the Journal of Yoga Science as Mind-Body Medicine, and books including The Heart and Science of Yoga: A Blueprint for Peace, Happiness and Freedom from Fear. This encyclopedic resource for experiencing the healing connection between mind, body, and spirit was the recipient of six major book awards during 2006 and 2007 including the Benjamin Franklin, ForeWord Magazine, Independent Publisher Book Awards, Eric Hoffer Awards and Nautilus Awards. The book has been endorsed by noted physicians Mehmet Oz, Dean Ornish, Bernie Siegel, and Larry Dossey.

In 2009, The American Meditation Institute hosted its First Annual Comprehensive Training in Holistic Mind-Body Medicine course for healthcare practitioners. [5] The course is acknowledged to be the first and only such complete yoga science curriculum in the United States to offer continuing medical education credits for physicians [6] registered nurses [7] and other health care practitioners.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing also known in some countries as a Bachelor of Nursing (BN) or Bachelor of Science (BS) with a Major in Nursing is an academic degree in the science and principles of nursing, granted by an accredited tertiary education provider. The course of study is typically three or four years. The difference in degree designation may relate to the amount of basic science courses required as part of the degree, with BScN and BSN degree curriculums requiring completion of more courses on math and natural sciences that are more typical of BSc degrees and BN curriculums more focused on nursing theory, nursing process, and teaching versions of general science topics that are adapted to be more specific and relevant to nursing practice. Nursing school students are generally required to take courses in social and behavioral sciences and liberal arts, including nutrition, anatomy, chemistry, mathematics, and English. In addition to those courses, experience in physical and social sciences, communication, leadership, and critical thinking is required for a bachelor's degree. BSN programs typically last 2–4 years. Someone who holds a BSN can work in private or public medical and surgical hospitals, physician's offices, home health care services, and nursing facilities. Having a BSN can result in more opportunities and better salary than just an associate degree.

Holistic nursing is a way of treating and taking care of the patient as a whole body, which involves physical, social, environmental, psychological, cultural and religious factors. There are many theories that support the importance of nurses approaching the patient holistically and education on this is there to support the goal of holistic nursing. The important skill to be used in holistic nursing would be communicating skills with patients and other practitioners. This emphasizes that patients being treated would be treated not only in their body but also their mind and spirit.. Holistic nursing is a nursing speciality concerning the integration of one's mind, body, and spirit with his or her environment. This speciality has a theoretical basis in a few grand nursing theories, most notably the science of unitary human beings, as published by Martha E. Rogers in An Introduction to the Theoretical Basis of Nursing, and the mid-range theory Empowered Holistic Nursing Education, as published by Dr. Katie Love. Holistic nursing has gained recognition by the American Nurses Association (ANA) as a nursing specialty with a defined scope of practice and standards. Holistic nursing focuses on the mind, body, and spirit working together as a whole and how spiritual awareness in nursing can help heal illness. Holistic medicine focuses on maintaining optimum well-being and preventing rather than just treating disease.
