The 2018 Basildon Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Basildon Borough Council in Essex. [1] This was on the same day as other local elections. The Conservative Party gained overall control of the council. which had previously been under no overall control and run by a coalition between UKIP, Labour and Independents. [2]

Essex County of England

One of the home counties, it borders Suffolk and Cambridgeshire to the north, Hertfordshire to the west, Kent across the estuary of the River Thames to the south, and London to the south-west. Ward changes took place in Hackney, Kensington and Chelsea, and Tower Hamlets, which reduced the total number of councillors by 10 to 1,851. Both the mayoral and councillor elections are four-yearly.

The 2015 Basildon Borough Council election took place on 7 May 2015, as part of the United Kingdom local elections, 2015, and took place alongside the UK General Election. One third of seats were up for election, with these seats last being contested in 2011. As a result of the election, the council remained in no overall control. The Conservative Party remained as the largest party, and formed a minority administration.

Each ward is represented by three councillors, the election of which is staggered, so only one third of the councillors were elected in this election. Before the election there was no overall control with a minority Labour administration. Following the election Labour, having gained one councillor, was still two councillors away from a majority so it remained no overall control.
