Charlotte Chopin (born 11 December 1922) is a French Yoga instructor recognized for her significant contributions to the field of yoga in France and her advocacy for its benefits on holistic well-being. Early life and personal life

Chopin was born in Lere, a small town in Cher, France. She began practicing Yoga at the age of 50 and credits her longevity and health to her yoga practice, advocating it as a means to improve quality of life. Despite her age, Chopin continues to teach and practice yoga actively. [3] [4]

Career and recognition

Chopin started teaching yoga shortly after she began practicing and has taught thousands of students over the past five decades. She operates a yoga studio in her hometown and conducts workshops across the country. [5] [6]

In May 2024, Chopin was awarded the Padma Shri by the President of India for her efforts in "defying age-limiting norms" and promoting yoga as a tool for holistic health. This accolade places her among a select group of non-Indians recognized for their contributions to cultural ties with India. [7]

Chopin has been featured in various French media outlets discussing the benefits of yoga for older adults and appeared on the French TV show "France's Got Incredible Talent," showcasing her yoga skills. [8] [9]

Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu was an Indian violinist in the Carnatic classical tradition. Known for his refined bowing technique and expressive playing, Naidu was one of the most celebrated violinists of the 20th century in Carnatic music. He was the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1953 and the Padma Shri in 1957. Despite being partially blind, Naidu achieved international recognition and influenced many students and musicians during his career. Several members of his family are also notable Carnatic violinists.

Tao Porchon-Lynch was an American yoga master and award-winning author of French and Indian descent. She discovered yoga in 1926 when she was eight years old in India and studied with, among others, Sri Aurobindo, B.K.S. Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois, Swami Prabhavananda, and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. At age 101, she taught a weekly class in New York, and led programs across the globe. She was the author of two books, including her autobiography, Dancing Light: The Spiritual Side of Being Through the Eyes of a Modern Yoga Master, which won a 2016 IPPY Award and three 2016 International Book Awards. In the front matter endorsement, Deepak Chopra said: "One of the most acclaimed yoga teachers of our century, Tao Porchon-Lynch... is a mentor to me who embodies the spirit of yoga and is an example of Ageless Body, Timeless Mind. Like yoga, she teaches us to let go and to have exquisite awareness in every moment."

Pappammal was an Indian organic farmer from Tamil Nadu. At the age of 105, she was argued to be the oldest farmer still active in the field. She was regarded as an agricultural pioneer and worked with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's department of education. She worked every day on her 2.5 acres of land. Due to her contributions to organic farming, the government of India honoured her in 2021 with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India.

Muktamani Devi, also known as Moirangthem Muktamani Devi, is an innovator and entrepreneur from the Indian State of Manipur who, from humble beginnings, founded a firm to manufacture hand knitted woolen shoes. The shoes are manufactured in Mukta Shoes Industry, established in 1990 and located in Kakching, Manipur. The firm is registered with the District Industries Center, Thoubal under wool and knitting embroidery section.

Tara Jauhar is a writer and educationist from Delhi, India who has dedicated her life for disseminating the teachings of Sri Aurobindo who was an Indian philosopher, yoga guru, poet and nationalist who advocated a philosophy of life based on spiritual evolution. Tara Jauhar is the Chairman of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Delhi Branch which had been founded by her father Surendra Nath Jauhar in the year 1956. In the year 2022, Govt of India honored her with the Padma Shri award for her life long work dedicated to spreading the teachings of Sri Aurobindo.

Rutger Kortenhorst is a teacher of Sanskrit in John Scottus Senior School in Dublin, Ireland. John Scottus School is a private school which has been teaching Sanskrit as a compulsory subject since its inception in 1986. In 2022, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri award for his dedicated work to propagate the Sanskrit language in Ireland.

R Muthukannammal is a seventh generation veteran Sadir dancer from the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. She is the only surviving person among the 32 Devadasis who served the deity at the Viralimalai Murugan temple and she is the last woman to have the ceremony pottukkattutal of dedicating oneself to God performed at the Viralimalai temple. In the year 2022, Govt of India honoured Muthukannammal by conferring the Padma Shri award for her contributions in the field of art. The dance form Sadir, variously called as Sadiraattam or Parathaiyar Aattam or Thevarattam, is a classical Indian dance from which was reinvented, modified and rechristened as Bharatanatyam through the efforts of E Krishna Iyer in 1932. However, Muthukannammal has chosen to call her art form Sadir, making her the only Sadir exponent today.
