Economic Advisory Council is a non-constitutional and independent body formed to give economic advice to the Government of Pakistan, specifically the Prime Minister.

Imran Khan ministry

In August 2021, the new government of Prime Minister Imran Khan reconstituted the council with the following members formed by the Prime Minister on Ministry of Finance recommendations for the Finance division under its Implementations and Economic Reforms Unit: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Among the members several retained their positions in Council from previous government, three members of the council belongs to non-economics background, and seven are ex or current office holder members including Asad Umar, on whose recommendations Council is formed. [10]

Council was also criticised for the lack of female representation. [11] [12]

Resigned members

Inclusion of renowned economist Atif Mian resulted in a controversy when former Deputy Speaker of Sindh Assembly Shehla Raza's social media team tweeted a racial and religious tweet against Mian, who belongs to Ahmadiyya faith. [13] However, she later apologized after receiving severe backlash. [14] [15] Previously Khan, himself was under backlash for naming Mian as his cabinet's Finance Minister, but he withdraw Mian's name saying he did not know that he belonged to Ahmadiyya community. [16] Initially, PTI has supported its decision on Mian's inclusion in Council. [17] [18] However after days of biased social media criticism from extremist religious groups, senator Faisal Javed Khan announced on 7 September 2018 in a tweet that, "Atif Mian was asked to step down from the Advisory Council and he has agreed. A replacement would be announced later." [19] [20] [21]

On 7 September 2018, Dr Khwaja resigned from the EAC protesting the government's decision to withdraw the nomination of Dr Mian. [22] On 8 September 2018, Dr Rasul became the second EAC member who resigned in protest over Dr Mian's removal. [23] [24]

Makhdum Khusro Bakhtyar is a Pakistani politician who recently served as Pakistan's Federal Minister for Industries & Production. Previously, he has served as Federal Minister of Economic Affairs, Federal Minister of National Food Security and Research and Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms in the PTI Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan. He had been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from 2002 to 2008, 2013 to 2018 and 2018 till 2023.

Shaukat Fayyaz Ahmed Tarin is a Pakistani politician and banker who served as Finance Minister of Pakistan from 2008 to 2010 in the Gillani cabinet also and worked with the help of the Pakistan People’s Party's cabinet members. On 27 December 2021, he was appointed the Finance Minister of Pakistan again, replacing the recently appointed Hammad Azhar after a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan Imran Khan. He is the Member of the Senate of Pakistan since March 2018.

Syed Salim Raza is a British Pakistani banker and financier who served as the 15th Governor of State Bank of Pakistan. In September 2018, Raza was appointed to the Economic Advisory Council (Pakistan), the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council.

Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India (PMEAC) is a non-constitutional, non-permanent and independent body constituted to give economic advice to the Government of India, specifically the Prime Minister. The council serves to highlight key economic issues facing the country to the government of India from a neutral viewpoint. It advises the Prime Minister on economic issues like inflation, microfinance, and industrial output.

He served as the Federal Minister for Planning, Development, Reforms and Special Initiatives, from 19 November 2019 to 10 April 2022.

Atif Rehman Mian is a Pakistani-American economist who serves as the John H. Laporte Jr. Class of 1967 Professor of Economics, Public Policy, and Finance at Princeton University, and as the Director of the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2021, and was elected Fellow of the Econometric Society in 2021.

Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan is a far-right Islamic extremist political party in Pakistan. The party was founded by Khadim Hussain Rizvi in August 2015. Waqar Masood Khan is a retired Pakistani civil servant who is serving as an Advisor to Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar on Finance, in office since August 2023. served as a Special Assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan on Revenue and Finance in the capacity of a Minister of State in Cabinet, in office from October 2020 till August 2021. Before his retirement from civil services, Waqar served in BPS-22 grade as Pakistan's longest running Secretary of Finance.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2019 Azadi march</span> 2019 protest march against Pakistan government

The 2019 Azadi march was a protest march led by Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) in Islamabad, Pakistan from 28 October 2019. The march opposed Prime Minister Imran Khan, demanding his resignation, and new elections. No women were part of the protests. The protest involved hundred of thousands of protesters.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Premiership of Shehbaz Sharif</span> Pakistan administration (2022– present)

On 10 April 2022, Shehbaz Sharif was nominated as candidate for Prime Minister of Pakistan by opposition parties following a vote of no confidence in incumbent prime minister Imran Khan during the 2022 Pakistani constitutional crisis. He was sworn in as Prime Minister on 11 April 2022.
