The first million-selling album in Canada was declared in May 1978 as Rumours by the British band Fleetwood Mac. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album is the first in Canada to achieve both double and triple Diamond certification.
The following albums have sold at least one million units within Canada. This certification has been attained by 18 Canadian albums, representing 11 artists and one compilation album. A Canadian artist, Celine Dion, holds the record for the most diamond albums, having had six albums reach this sales status in Canada.
Double diamond awards are issued to albums that have sold two million units, representing the highest-selling music albums in Canadian history. Only two Canadian artists, Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain, have attained this level of certification; Twain and Pink Floyd are the only two artists to have reached it with more than one album.

In the United States, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) operates an awards program based on the certified number of albums and singles sold through retail and other ancillary markets. Other countries have similar awards. Certification is not automatic; for an award to be made, the record label must first request certification. Up! is the fourth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Shania Twain. It was released on November 19, 2002, by Mercury Nashville. Three versions of the album were released: a pop version, a country version, and a version in the style of Indian film music. This was the last album of Twain's career to be produced by her then-husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange before their divorce and her last studio release until 2017's Now.

Diamonds is a greatest hits album by English musician Elton John spanning his hits from 1970 to 2016. The album was released on 10 November 2017. It was released in a single disc version, a 2-CD version, a 3-CD deluxe box set, and a 2-LP vinyl version. The two-disc and vinyl versions have either as many or fewer songs than the previous multi-platinum collection. It was re-issued in January 2025 as a Blu-ray audio disc that quickly sold out, featuring 51 tracks. Forty-eight tracks were remixed in Dolby Atmos with optional PCM stereo 48khz 24-bit mixes, whilst tracks 49-51 were only available in PCM.
