New Jersey's 11th congressional district is a suburban district in northern New Jersey.^[3] The district includes portions of Essex, Morris, and Passaic Counties.^[4] It is centered in Morris County.^[5]

The 11th congressional district, along with the 12th, was created in 1913 based on the results of the 1910 census, and was centered in Essex County. The congressional seat was held by Democrats for almost 36 years under Hugh Joseph Addonizio ^[6] and Joseph Minish.^[7] The 1980 redistricting shifted the focus of the district to the Republican-dominated Morris County. Republican Dean Gallo defeated 22-year incumbent Democrat Joseph Minish in 1984.^[8] The district became one of the most reliably Republican districts in the Northeast.^[9] It has traditionally leaned Republican but has shifted slightly more Democratic in recent years,^[5] and has been represented by Democrat Mikie Sherrill since 2019.^[10]

Since 2023, the 11th district lost all of its towns in Sussex County, and gained several new towns in Essex County, such as Millburn and Belleville, but otherwise still contains most of Morris County. The current version of the district is not nearly as competitive, and is significantly more Democratic.^[11]

Little Falls, Totowa, Wayne (part; also 9th; includes Packanack Lake, William Paterson University of New Jersey, and part of Preakness), Woodland Park.

2018 election

In January 2018, 12-term incumbent Republican Rodney Frelinghuysen announced that he would not seek re-election; earlier, leading political observers had rated the district as a "toss-up" in the November 2018 election.^[18] Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, was the Democratic nominee in 2018. Assemblyman Jay Webber of New Jersey's 26th Assembly District was the Republican nominee. Attorney Ryan Martinez was the Libertarian Party nominee.^[19] On November 6, 2018, Sherrill prevailed by an unexpectedly large margin,^[20] defeating Webber 56.8%-42.1%. The district shifted 33% towards the Democrats.^[20]

Millburn is a suburban township in southwestern Essex County, within the U.S. state of New Jersey, and part of the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 21,710, its highest decennial count ever and an increase of 1,561 (+7.7%) from the 20,149 recorded at the 2010 census, which in turn reflected an increase of 384 (+1.9%) from the 19,765 counted in the 2000 census. Harding Township is a township in Morris County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It is located in the Passaic Valley region within the New York Metropolitan area. The township was formed as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on September 1, 1922, from portions of Passaic Township, based on the results of a referendum passed on May 9, 1922. As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 3,871, an increase of 33 (+0.9%) from the 2010 census count of 3,838, which in turn reflected an increase of 658 (+20.7%) from the 3,180 counted in the 2000 census.

Lincoln Park is a borough in Morris County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Joseph George Minish was an American Democratic Party politician from New Jersey who represented New Jersey's 11th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

Rebecca Michelle "Mikie" Sherrill is an American politician, former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, attorney, and former federal prosecutor serving as the U.S. representative for New Jersey's 11th congressional district since 2019. The district includes a swath of suburban and exurban areas west of New York City. A member of the Democratic Party, Sherrill was elected on November 6, 2018. She was reelected in 2020 by a slightly narrower margin and reelected in 2022 by a wide margin. She is currently seeking the Democratic nomination for Governor of New Jersey.

The 2022 United States House of Representatives elections in New Jersey were held on November 8, 2022, to elect the 12 U.S. representatives from the state of New Jersey, one from each of the state's 12 congressional districts.

The 2025 New Jersey gubernatorial election is scheduled to take place on November 4, 2025, to elect the governor of New Jersey. Incumbent Democratic Governor Phil Murphy is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term in office. Primary elections will take place on June 10, 2025.
