On2Ottawa is a Canadian environmental activist group founded in March 2023. Their members engage in civil disobedience to pressure the Government of Canada to take action on climate change, often to the point of arrest. Their actions have included traffic obstructions, disruption of cultural events, and art vandalism.
The group draws inspiration from the teaching of UK climate scientist David King. [1] They aspire to unite other Canadian environmental groups to converge in Ottawa for mass protest. [2]
On2Ottawa has called for the creation of a legally-binding citizens' assembly to develop environmental policy. [3]
Prompted by the unprecedented severity of the 2023 Canadian wildfires, On2Ottawa has called for the implementation in Canada of a nationalized firefighting service. [3]
On March 1, 2023, three On2Ottawa activists, including Laura Sullivan, smeared pink paint on an exhibit at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria. The activists applied the washable paint to a model of a Woolly mammoth. Victoria police arrested the activists and charged them with mischief. [4]
Two weeks later, On2Ottawa activist Casey Hatherly interrupted singer Avril Lavigne while presenting on stage during the Juno Awards of 2023. Naked from the waist up, Hatherly had "Land back", "Save the green belt" and "Stop logging old growth now" was written on her torso. [5] [6] Hatherly was charged with mischief and was detained overnight in Edmonton Remand Centre before appearing in an Edmonton court. [1] [7]
On April 15, 2023, Hatherly splattered pink paint around the entrance of the Office of the Prime Minister. Hatherly posed with a sign that stated “Demand climate action now!” [8] before chaining herself to the building. [9] Two On2Ottawa members were detained by police after firefighters cut the chain attaching Hatherly to the building. [9]
On August 8, 2023, Sullivan set off pink smoke bombs and sprayed pink paint on the Toronto Sign in Toronto, before gluing herself to its base. [10]
From August 20 to September 9, 2023, On2Ottawa members participated in periodic traffic obstruction throughout the capital and in neighbouring Gatineau, leading to multiple arrests. [11] [12]
On August 29, 2023, Kaleb Suedfeld, a member of On2Ottawa, threw washable pink paint on Tom Thomson's Northern River at the National Gallery of Canada. [13] Suedfeld glued himself to the floor and read out a statement before being arrested and charged with mischief. [14] The painting, protected by a glass covering, was undamaged. [15] It was placed back on display on August 30. [16]

The Camps for Climate Action are campaign gatherings that take place to draw attention to, and act as a base for direct action against, major carbon emitters, as well as to develop ways to create a zero-carbon society. Camps are run on broadly anarchist principles – free to attend, supported by donations and with input from everyone in the community for the day-to-day operation of the camp. Initiated in the UK, camps have taken place in England at Drax power station, Heathrow Airport, Kingsnorth power station in Kent, the City of London and The Royal Bank of Scotland Headquarters, near Edinburgh. During 2009 camps also took place in Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Netherlands/Belgium, Scotland, Wales and Australia.
Christina Alexandra Freeland is a Canadian politician serving as the tenth and current deputy prime minister of Canada since 2019 and the minister of finance since 2020. A member of the Liberal Party, Freeland represents the Toronto riding of University—Rosedale in the House of Commons. She was first appointed to Cabinet following the 2015 federal election.
Femen is a Ukrainian radical feminist activist group whose goal is to protect women's rights. The organization became internationally known for organizing controversial topless protests against sex tourism, religious institutions, sexism, homophobia, and other social, national, and international topics. Founded in Ukraine, the group is now based in France. Femen describes its ideology as being "sextremism, atheism and feminism".

In Canada, topfreedom has primarily been an attempt to combat the interpretation of indecency laws that considered a woman's breasts to be indecent, and therefore their exhibition in public an offence. In British Columbia, it is a historical issue dating back to the 1930s and the public protests against the materialistic lifestyle held by the radical religious sect of the Freedomites, whose pacifist beliefs led to their exodus from Russia to Canada at the end of the 19th century. The Svobodniki became famous for their public nudity: primarily for their nude marches in public and the acts of arson committed also in the nude.
Artur Pawlowski is a Polish-Canadian evangelical street preacher and political activist. He is pastor of the Cave of Adullam congregation in Calgary and previously led the Kings Glory Fellowship (KGF). Pawlowski is also founder and pastor of Street Church Ministries (SCM), a group no longer recognized as a religious or charitable organization by the Canadian government.
Julian Roger Hallam is a British environmental activist, a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, cooperative federation organisation Radical Routes, the political party Burning Pink, Just Stop Oil, and Insulate Britain.
Extinction Rebellion (XR) is an international "non-violent civil disobedience" movement carrying out demonstrations worldwide to highlight governments' inaction on climate change. Since 2018, Extinction Rebellion has taken a variety of actions in Europe, the US, and rapidly elsewhere in the world, to urge political and economic forces to take action amid the climate crisis. Although, their non-violent disobedience protests are an effort to generate attention around environmental issues, XR activists have become known for civil disobedience and disruptive tactics.
Burning Pink, also known as Beyond Politics and formally registered with the Electoral Commission as The Burning Pink Party, was a British political party with the stated goal of a political revolution by replacing the British government with citizens' assemblies in order to tackle the climate crisis and other political issues. The party was deregistered by the Electoral Commission on 11 November 2022.
Christopher Saccoccia, widely referred to as Chris Sky, is a Canadian social media personality known for his involvement in the anti-mask, anti-lockdown, COVID-19 denial and anti-vaccine movements during the COVID-19 pandemic. Saccoccia faces a number of legal issues and criminal charges including for allegations of uttering death threats against Ontario Premier Doug Ford and other public figures and for assault of a police officer, among others. Saccoccia ran for Mayor of Toronto in the 2023 by-election, placing ninth.
Impossible Rebellion was a series of nonviolent climate change protests in the United Kingdom organised by Extinction Rebellion (XR), from 23 August 2021 to 4 September 2021. The protests particularly targeted the City of London to raise awareness of the role of the financial sector in climate change. Protesters during the Impossible Rebellion demanded that the UK government cease new investments in the fossil fuel industry. XR also demand that the government declare a climate emergency, reach net zero carbon emissions by 2025 and create a citizens' assembly on climate change.

Just Stop Oil is a British environmental activist group primarily focused on the issue of human-caused climate change. The group aims to convince the British government to commit to ending new fossil fuel licensing and production using civil resistance, nonviolent direct action, traffic obstruction, and vandalism. The group was founded in February 2022 and began protesting at English oil terminals in April 2022. The group has received criticism for its disruptive methods of activism.
The Juno Awards of 2023 was a music awards ceremony that was held on 13 March 2023 at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. It recognized the best recordings, compositions, and artists of the eligibility year determined by the members of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. It returned to its usual March schedule for the first time since 2019 after COVID-19 pandemic had the last three events took place in June 2020, May 2021, and May 2022, respectively. Canadian actor Simu Liu, who hosted the 2022 ceremony, returned to host again.
Christopher John Barber, and usually known as Chris Barber, is a Canadian trucking company operator, and activist who co-led the Canadian convoy protest. He was arrested on February 17, 2022 and released on bail the next day. His courtroom defence had yet to be heard as of January 2024.
