The provinces of Denmark (Danish : Landsdele) are statistical divisions of Denmark, positioned between the administrative regions and municipalities. They are not administrative divisions, nor subject for any kind of political elections, but are mainly for statistical use. [1]
This is a list of the eleven Danish provinces and the regions they belong to. There are five regions (EU standard NUTS 2) and eleven provinces (EU standard NUTS 3). The provinces Copenhagen City and Copenhagen surroundings are largely build up areas, the same applies also for large parts of East Zealand and North Zealand.
Although East Zealand (NUTS-3 level) belongs to healthcare Region Zealand (NUTS-2 level), in other respects (like public transport, road maintenance, metropolitan future planning, known as the Finger Plan in all versions since 1949, regional radio and television etc.) it belongs to the Metropolitan Area of Greater Copenhagen. This has been the case since 1970, but at that time the East Zealand province was an administrational and political unit, called Roskilde Amt.

Occasionally the East Jutland province, with around 850,000 inhabitants in 5,841 square kilometres, is labeled as Greater Aarhus, however less than 40% of its population lives in Aarhus municipality.
A county is a geographic region of a country used for administrative or other purposes in some nations. The term is derived from the Old French comté denoting a jurisdiction under the sovereignty of a count (earl) or a viscount. Literal equivalents in other languages, derived from the equivalent of "count", are now seldom used officially, including comté, contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, graafschap, and zhupa in Slavic languages; terms equivalent to 'commune' or 'community' are now often instead used.
The Counties of Denmark were former subdivisions of metropolitan Denmark and overseas territories, used primarily for administrative regions, with each county having its own council with substantial powers. Originally there had been twenty-four counties, but the number was reduced to roughly fourteen in 1970 – the number fluctuated slightly over the next three decades. In 2006 there were thirteen traditional counties as well as three municipalities with county status. On 1 January 2007 the counties were abolished and replaced by five larger regions which, unlike the counties, are not municipalities.

The Central Denmark Region, or more directly translated as the Central Jutland Region and sometimes simply Mid-Jutland, is an administrative region of Denmark established on 1 January 2007 as part of the 2007 Danish municipal reform. The reform abolished the traditional counties (amter) and replaced them with five new administrative regions. At the same time, smaller municipalities were merged into larger units, cutting the total number of municipalities from 271 to 98. The reform diminished the power of the regional level dramatically in favour of the local level and the national government in Copenhagen. The Central Denmark Region comprises 19 municipalities.
The five Regions of Denmark were created as administrative entities at a level above the municipalities and below the central government in the public sector as part of the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, when the 13 counties (amter) were abolished. At the same time, the number of municipalities (kommuner) was cut from 270 to 98. The reform was approved and made into a law by the lawmakers in the Folketing 26 June 2005 with elections to the 98 municipalities and 5 regions being held Tuesday 15 November 2005.
