San Francisco del Monte

San Francisco del Monte, also referred to as SFDM and Frisco, is a district of Quezon City, Metro Manila, the Philippines. It is bisected by two major thoroughfares, Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue and the eponymous Del Monte Avenue, and is bounded by Atty. Pat Senador Sr. Street and Baler Street to the north, and Judge Juan Luna Street, Paraiso Street, and Cooper Street to the east.

The district encompasses the barangays of Del Monte, Damayan, Mariblo, and Paraiso, and its water borders are defined by the San Juan River to the west and the Mariblo Creek to the south.

History

San Francisco del Monte may be considered as Quezon City's oldest district. It was founded as a pueblo by then-Franciscan missionary Fray Pedro Bautista on February 17, 1590, who named it after St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order. Del Monte , which is Spanish for "on the mountain" was added to the name not only because the area was hilly, but also to distinguish the place from the San Francisco de Manila Church in Intramuros, Manila.^[1]

After World War II, the portions of the district hosted the United States Armed Forces Cemetery #2, where remains of deceased American POWs from the early part of the war were interred.^[2]

The original land area of the old town of San Francisco del Monte was approximately 2.5 square kilometres (1.0 sq mi) and covered parts of what is currently known as Project 7 and 8 and Timog Avenue. It was previously part of the town of San Juan del Monte until it was absorbed by Quezon City.^[3]^[4] It later composed of barangays San Antonio, Paraiso, Paltok, Mariblo, Masambong, Manresa, Damayan and Del Monte. It featured a hilly topography with lush vegetation and mineral springs, in the midst of which the old San Pedro Bautista Church was built as a retreat and monastery for Franciscan friars.

Today, it is a heavily populated district with a mix of residential, industrial, and commercial areas. The most prominent educational institutions located in the area are Siena College of Quezon City, Angelicum College, and PMI Colleges, while Fisher Mall is the largest commercial establishment. The transmitter and studios of IBC are located along Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue.

Famous residents include the late Filipino actor Fernando Poe, Jr. whose ancestral home can still be found in Barangay Paraiso along Roosevelt Avenue; the aforementioned avenue would be later renamed after him in 2022.

Fernando Poe Jr. station is the current northern terminus of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) system. It opened on October 22, 2010, as part of the LRT-1 North Extension Project, as Roosevelt and was renamed to its current name on August 20, 2023, almost two years after the namesake avenue was officially renamed after the Filipino actor.

The Manila North Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Metro Manila, Philippines. The cemetery is owned by and located in the City of Manila, the national capital, and is one of the largest in the metropolis at 54 hectares. Built in 1985, it is a 6- to 8-lane divided avenue designated as part of Circumferential Road 3 (C-3) and a physical continuation of Sergeant Rivera Street which travels from Santo Domingo Avenue at its north end near Balintawak in Quezon City, and meets N. Domingo Street in the south in San Juan near the border with Santa Mesa, Manila. En route, it intersects with Del Monte Avenue, Quezon Avenue, Eulogio Rodriguez Sr. Avenue and Magsaysay-Aurora Boulevard passing through barangays Balingasa, Manresa, Masambong, Sienna, Santo Domingo, Talayan, Tatalon, Santol, and Doña Imelda in Quezon City and Progreso in San Juan.

Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue, formerly Roosevelt Avenue, is the principal north–south tertiary road serving the San Francisco del Monte district of Quezon City, Philippines. It runs with a length of 2.871 kilometers (1.784 mi) between Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) to the north and Quezon Avenue to the south. The avenue is named after Fernando Poe Jr., a renowned Filipino actor and National Artist of the Philippines who once lived along it. As Roosevelt Avenue, it was named after former United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Colonel Bonny Serrano Avenue, formerly named and still colloquially known as and referred to as Santolan Road, is a major east–west thoroughfare in the Eastern Manila District of Metro Manila, Philippines, between San Juan and Quezon City. It forms the northern limit of San Juan and the southern limit of Quezon City's New Manila district. It also links the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame with the AFP headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo. The church is dedicated to its founder Padre Pedro Bautista, a Spanish missionary from Ávila, Spain, one of the 26 Christians martyred in Japan in 1597.
