Tanjung Kupang is a mukim in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru District, Johor, Malaysia. [1]
The mukim has an area of 283 km2 with a population of 10,702 people. [2]
Tanjung Kupang was the crash site of Malaysian Airline System Flight 653 on December 4, 1977. The flight was hijacked and crashed near Kampong Ladang, Tanjung Kupang. All 93 passengers and 7 crew perished and no recognisable bodies were found. The remains were buried in a common grave known as Tanjung Kupang Memorial at Jalan Kebun Teh.
The Malaysia–Singapore Second Link was built between Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Kampong Ladang at Tanjung Kupang, Johor and Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim at Tuas, Singapore. The bridge was built to reduce the traffic congestion at the Johor–Singapore Causeway, and was opened to traffic on 2 January 1998. The twin-deck bridge supports a dual-three lane carriageway and its total length over water is 1,920 m.

It was officially opened by Singapore's then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong with Mahathir Mohamad, who was then Prime Minister of Malaysia. The bridge supports a dual-three lane carriageway linking Kampong Ladang at Tanjung Kupang, Johor to Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim at Tuas, Singapore. The total length of the bridge over water is 1.92 kilometres (1.19 mi). The actual distance between both checkpoints is approximately 6 kilometres (3.7 mi). At Malaysian side, the bridge is connected to the Second Link Expressway E3 also known as Linkedua Expressway, which links from Senai North Interchange Exit 253 at North–South Expressway E2, Senai Airport and Taman Perling, Johor Bahru via its extension known as Johor Bahru Parkway E3. In Singapore, the bridge connects to the Ayer Rajah Expressway.

Malaysian Airline System Flight 653 (MH653) was a scheduled domestic flight from Penang to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, operated by Malaysian Airline System (MAS). On the evening of 4 December 1977, the Boeing 737-200 aircraft flying the service crashed at Tanjung Kupang, Johor, Malaysia, while purportedly being diverted by hijackers to Singapore. It was the first fatal air crash for Malaysia Airlines, with all 93 passengers and 7 crew killed. It is also the deadliest aviation disaster to occur on Malaysian soil. The flight was apparently hijacked as soon as it reached cruise altitude. The circumstances in which the hijacking and subsequent crash occurred remain unsolved.
