Television in Ethiopia was introduced in 1962 with the government owned ETV. Color television started in 1979 on an experiment basis with regular transmissions starting in 1984 to commemorate the founding of Workers' Party of Ethiopia (WPE). [1] Ethiopia got its first private television broadcaster in 2008 with EBS TV, a US based satellite TV channel mostly focused on infotainment.
Until very recently there was only one private station with most of the stations being state owned. However, emphasis on liberalization of the TV market eventually led to a wave of privately owned stations coming about recent years. In 2014 the Oromo diaspora launched the one and only television; Oromia Media Network, based in US OMN. In 2016 and 2017, more private broadcasters such as the news centered ENN TV and others like LTV Ethiopia, Kana TV, Qubee TV Is An Entertainment, Educational and News Media Established 2023 With A Great Vision To Be The Best In Ethiopia And East Africa, EOTC TV all joined the market. Dimtsi Weyane and were launched at the end 2018. 7 million households in Ethiopia has at least one television set and about 55 percent of the population has access to the watch television in their homes. The national public broadcaster EBC (formerly ERTA) started broadcasting in 1962 as the first television station in Ethiopia. In the last couple of the decades the broadcaster had opened multiple regional stations and channels broadcasting in various languages. [3] Privatization of the television industry was a slow process with the first privately run broadcaster, EBS TV, launching in 2008. However, 2016 and 2017 saw a wave of private station entering the market including what became the most popular channel, Kana TV, to increase the total number of private station's in Ethiopia to 45. [2]
In 2016 the government of Ethiopia announced it would be transition the country from analog to digital platform. The American company GatesAir won the contract for the project that will take 5–10 years to fully complete. [4]

Public broadcasting involves radio, television, and other electronic media outlets whose primary mission is public service. Public broadcasters receive funding from diverse sources including license fees, individual contributions, public financing, and commercial financing, and claim to avoid both political interference and commercial influence.
WLKY is a television station in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, affiliated with CBS. The station is owned by Hearst Television, and maintains studios on Mellwood Avenue in the Clifton Heights section on Louisville's east side; its transmitter is located in rural northeastern Floyd County, Indiana.
KWBQ is a television station licensed to Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States, serving the Albuquerque area as a de facto owned-and-operated station of The CW. The station's transmitter is located atop Sandia Crest. KWBQ is owned by Mission Broadcasting alongside MyNetworkTV affiliate KASY-TV. The two stations share studios with dual CBS/Fox affiliate KRQE on Broadcast Plaza in Albuquerque. Nexstar Media Group, which owns KRQE and holds a majority stake in The CW, provides master control, technical, engineering and accounting services for KWBQ and KASY-TV through a shared services agreement (SSA), though the two stations are otherwise operated separately from KRQE as Mission handles programming, advertising sales and retransmission consent negotiations.

Television in Trinidad and Tobago was introduced in 1962 beginning with Trinidad & Tobago Television. TTT was the sole television station for 29 years being operated by the state until the first independently operated television station, the Caribbean Communications Network, CCN TV6 was launched in 1991 breaking the television monopoly market. In 1992, a second independently operated station, AVM Television was launched. The first independently operated cable station, The Trinity Network (TTN) now Trinity TV began operations in 1993 broadcasting on weekends only.
Weigel Broadcasting Co. is an American television broadcasting company based in Chicago, Illinois, alongside its flagship station WCIU-TV, at 26 North Halsted Street in the Greektown neighborhood. It currently owns 25 television stations, seven digital over-the-air television networks, and one radio station.
The mass media in Ethiopia consist of radio, television and the Internet, which remain under the control of the Ethiopian government, as well as private newspapers and magazines. Ten radio broadcast stations, eight AM and two shortwave, are licensed to operate in Ethiopia. The major radio broadcasting stations include Radio Fana a private station, Radio Voice of One Free Ethiopia, and the Voice of the Revolution of Tigray. The only terrestrial (broadcast) television networks are government owned and include EBC and other regional stations. In keeping with government policy, radio broadcasts occur in a variety of languages including Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Tigrigna, and more. There are also many video sharing websites which are a popular way of getting information as well as entertainment in Ethiopia.

Originally formed in 2008 as a joint venture between Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Weigel Broadcasting, the network carried various unscripted series from Entertainment Studios' library. The network previously had a large programming emphasis on films, primarily sourced from the library of former owner MGM, but all films were dropped from the schedule in 2024. Classic television series and children's programming had also aired on the network previously. The network quietly closed and merged into TheGrio on May 31, 2024, with the website eventually being shuttered July 13.

Bounce features a mix of original and acquired programming geared toward African Americans between 25 and 54 years of age.
Kana TV is an Ethiopian satellite television channel owned by Dubai-based Moby Group. It was co-founded by three Ethiopian entrepreneurs in combination with Moby Media Group and was officially launched on April 4, 2016. Kana TV produces voice-over translation by dubbing foreign content to Amharic. The channel programming focuses on serial dramas especially Turkish television dramas, which gain overall exceeding rate in its market share, becoming the most popular television channel in Ethiopia.
LTV Ethiopia is an Ethiopian satellite television channel owned and started by Gemechis Buba. It was created for the purpose of spreading the Ethiopian culture to the world through its programming and to fill the lack of private channels in Ethiopia.
Ethiopian Broadcasting Service is an Ethiopian free to air television network. Launched in 2008, the network is based in Ethiopia with correspondents both in United States at its headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, U.S. EBS TV broadcasts programs in mostly Amharic. EBS TV is the first private channel launched in Ethiopia.
JTV Ethiopia is an Ethiopian free-to-air satellite television channel owned by Yosef Gebre, a journalist, singer and philanthropist who previously began his TV show in EBS TV before establishing his own channel. It is based in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S and launched in 2016 on Nilesat. In May 2020, the channel in its standard-definition (SD) television platform was officially closed as a result of poor revenue from each employee and the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the station for less advertising income. However, the channel still exists in HD and is transmitted via Ethiosat.
