The Wandel Sea (Danish : Wandelhavet; also known as McKinley Sea [2] ) is a body of water in the Arctic Ocean, stretching from northeast of Greenland to Svalbard. It is obstructed by ice most of the year.
This sea is named after Danish polar explorer and hydrographer, Vice Admiral Carl Frederick Wandel, who in the years 1895–96 explored the coastal waters of Greenland as part of the Danish Ingolf Expedition. [3]
This arctic sea is located at 82° north longitude and 21° west latitude. Seas farther north and northwest of the Wandel Sea were once frozen year-round but now may have open water in late summer, as of August 2018. [4] The Wandel Sea stretches westward as far as Cape Morris Jesup. Further west is the Lincoln Sea. In the south, it stretches to Nordostrundingen. The Wandel Sea connects to the Greenland Sea in the south through the Fram Strait.
Independence Fjord and Frederick E. Hyde Fjord are two great fjords of the far-northeast Greenland coast having their mouths in the Wandel Sea. [5] G.B. Schley Fjord and Hellefisk Fjord are smaller fjords located between both.
Islands include: Princess Thyra Island, the largest, Kaffeklubben Island, the northernmost, as well as Princess Dagmar Island, located not far from Station Nord, the only inhabited place in the area.
Danmark Fjord, also known as Denmark Sound, is a fjord in northeast Greenland. Administratively it belongs to the Northeast Greenland National Park.
Peary Land is a peninsula in northern Greenland, extending into the Arctic Ocean. It reaches from Victoria Fjord in the west to Independence Fjord in the south and southeast, and to the Arctic Ocean in the north, with Cape Morris Jesup, the northernmost point of Greenland's mainland, and Cape Bridgman in the northeast.
Clavering Island is a large island in eastern Greenland off Gael Hamke Bay, to the south of Wollaston Foreland.
Independence Fjord or Independence Sound is a large fjord or sound in the eastern part of northern Greenland. It is about 200 km (120 mi) long and up to 30 km (19 mi) wide. Its mouth, opening to the Wandel Sea of the Arctic Ocean is located at 82°15′N21°54′W.
Frederick E. Hyde Fjord is a fjord in Peary Land, far northern Greenland.

G.B. Schley Fjord is a fjord in Peary Land, northern Greenland. To the east, the fjord opens into the Wandel Sea of the Arctic Ocean.
Hellefisk Fjord is a fjord in Peary Land, northern Greenland. To the northeast, the fjord opens into the Wandel Sea of the Arctic Ocean.
Bliss Bay is a bay in the Wandel Sea, Northern Greenland. The area of the bay is uninhabited. Administratively Bliss Bay and its surroundings belong to the Northeast Greenland National Park.
