Bruma is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. In the 1990s, Bruma was well known for South Africa's first manmade lake-side shopping centre and its popular African curios and crafts market, which attracted tourists and day visitors from around the country. As a popular entertainment destination, Bruma boasted many activities and a plethora of restaurants and retail stores. Many of South Africa's large restaurant chain stores can find their roots at the then-called Fishermans Village. Well-remembered restaurants and entertainment venues included Late Night Al's, Norma Jeans Diner, The Grillhouse, Maresol, Helen of Troy, Johnny Rockets, Cocktails and The Magic Company.
In 2015, the City of Johannesburg spearheaded the rehabilitation of the Bruma Lake precinct and created a platform for businesses and properties to once again flourish in the Bruma CBD. The new Bruma Lake Park was created and the Bruma bridge refurbished at a cost of R80 million.
Currently Bruma Lifestyle Centre is situated adjacent to the new Bruma Lake Park. Originally a buzzing cosmopolitan retail centre with restaurants, entertainment and shopping the centre deteriorated due to several contributing factors.[ citation needed ]
Currently plans are underway to develop the existing Bruma Lifestyle Centre. The new Bruma centre will be known as CHROMA.
Bruma is a unique location and is known as the gateway to Johannesburg. The Bruma Bridge is a landmark loved by all and sets the tone for this great metropolitan city. Strategically positioned only 10 minutes from the airport and minutes away from Africa's leading shopping centre Eastgate, Bruma is ideally positioned to welcome the world. Bruma's newly formed riverfront park is a one-of-a-kind gem and truly special place.
This residential suburban area is set beautifully against the hillside known as Linksfield Ridge. Bruma also has an abundance of hotels and many regional business headquarters, banks, consulates, motor dealerships and office parks. Bruma also has the well-known Oriental City, a shoppers paradise that evolved from the original Bruma Flea Market to become a centre of bargain buys that has a diversity of products for all.
The neighbouring suburbs include Cyrildene, where a small Chinatown exists, Bedfordview and Kensington.

There are more than 50 art and craft traders presently operating along Oppenheimer Street, Bruma (opposite McDonald's). A variety of local art and crafts and other African products form the range of attraction for tourists and visitors. Some of the arts and crafts sold at the market include handmade items such as bead work, wood crafts, wire art, stone sculptures, African clothing and leather souvenirs.
The Railway Safety Regulator previously had its head office in Waterview Corner in Bruma. [6]
The R24, N12 and N3 Eastern Bypass highways are accessible from Bruma, and the R24 highway leads directly to O.R International Airport, formerly called Johannesburg Airport.

Eastgate Shopping Centre is a super-regional shopping centre in Bedfordview, near Bedford Gardens and the Johannesburg city centre in Gauteng. It remains one of the largest centres in the country and is the fourth largest shopping centre in Gauteng, after Mall of Africa, Sandton City and Menlyn Park. The centre lies next to the R24 airport freeway, between the Johannesburg CBD to the west and O. R. Tambo International Airport to the east.
Nelson Mandela Square is a shopping centre in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa, that includes a large open area built to resemble a traditional European town square, and an office complex. The centre was formerly known as Sandton Square and was named for the former president of South Africa and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela in March 2004. A six metre high statue of Mandela was unveiled at the ceremony to rename the square. It is attached to the large Sandton City shopping centre, together forming one of the largest retail complexes on the continent with over 400 stores. The Michelangelo Towers complex adjoins Nelson Mandela Square.

Roodepoort is a town in the Gauteng province of South Africa. The R21 is a major north–south provincial route in eastern Gauteng Province, South Africa. Built in the early 1970s, it remains one of two freeways linking Pretoria with Johannesburg, via the R24. As the eastern of the two freeways, it links the Pretoria city centre with OR Tambo International Airport and Boksburg. Between the Solomon Mahlangu Drive on-ramp in Monument Park, Pretoria, and the N12 interchange in Boksburg, the R21 is an 8 lane highway and motorway (freeway), with 4 lanes in each direction. It has off-ramps leading to Irene, Olifantsfontein, Benoni, and Kempton Park. The route intersects the N1 highway near Centurion, the R24 near the airport, the N12 and N17 in Boksburg, and the N3 near Vosloorus on the East Rand, where it ends. The section from the N12 to the N3 is not a freeway. The R21 is also designated as the P157.
The R24 is a major East-West provincial route in the Gauteng and North West provinces that links OR Tambo International Airport with Rustenburg via Johannesburg, Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg. The process of renaming the streets and freeway that form the route from Krugersdorp eastward to OR Tambo International after anti-apartheid stalwart Albertina Sisulu was completed in 2013.
