South Hills is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Also known as Suidheuwels in Afrikaans, it is about 20 minutes drive from Johannesburg Central. It is located in Region F of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

History

Prior to the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, the suburb lay on land on one of the original farms called Klipriviersberg. [2] It was originally called Welfare Park when it was established as a suburb on 23 September 1942. [2] It obtained its current name in 1962, found in hills in the south of Johannesburg. [2]

South Hills has four schools namely Montanus Primary School (formerly Suidrand Laerskool), Suidheuwels Laerskool, Crestview Primary school and Diversity High school (formerly J.G. Strijdom Hoerskool).

Brits is a town situated in a fertile citrus, vegetable and grain-producing area that is irrigated by the waters of the Hartbeespoort Dam in North West Province of South Africa. It is close to the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, which includes Pretoria, and it has the same dialling code as Pretoria. In addition to being a centre for agriculture, the city is home to several heavy industries. A factory of the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo produced cars for the domestic market and export to Asia from 1974 to 1985. The city also plays an important role in the South African mining industry: 94% of South Africa's platinum comes from the Rustenburg and Brits districts, which together produce more platinum than any other single area in the world. In addition, there is a large vanadium mine in the district.

The area referred to as Fourways is the fastest-developing commercial and residential hub in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, South Africa. The main access routes to Fourways are off the N1 at R511 William Nicol Drive, or alternatively along R564 Witkoppen Road. It is located mostly in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. It is roughly as far as one can go in the Johannesburg Metropolitan area before it dissolves into rolling hills, game farms and the capital Pretoria, 55 kilometres to the northeast. Hartebeespoort Dam and the Magaliesberg Mountains lie half an hour to the north-west. It is bordered by Bryanston to the east and south and Randburg to the west.

Secunda is a town built amidst the coalfields of the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. It was named for being the second Sasol extraction refinery producing oil from coal, after Sasolburg, some 140 kilometres (87 mi) to the west.

Northcliff is a wealthy residential suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. The suburb is located on Northcliff Ridge which provides views to both the north and the south. Northcliff's huge homes are nestled around a steep incline of the hill, and on the foot of Northcliff borders the suburbs of Fairland, Blackheath, Cresta and Berario. Recently some streets have been secured with boom gates. Although erroneously included by Google Maps as part of Randburg, Northcliff has never been part of Randburg. It is located in Region B of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

Florida is a location in Gauteng province, South Africa. It is located about 16 kilometres west of Johannesburg. The area which is referred to as Florida was originally established as the farm Vogelstruisfontein. Today, it is a suburb of Roodepoort.

Mondeor is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is located in Region F of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Known as the Jewel of the South, Mondeor is set amongst hills outside the urban Johannesburg area but is only a 15-minute drive from the city centre.

Claremont is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, around 9 km west-northwest of City Hall. Under the old municipal borders, it was one of the westernmost suburbs of the city and bordered Roodepoort.
