The Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) affiliated with the University of Pretoria, is a business school situated in Illovo, Johannesburg, South Africa. The institution has received accreditation from the Council on Higher Education (CHE) in South Africa and the Association of MBAs (AMBA) internationally. [1]

Contents

GIBS offers programmes including the Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (PDBA), and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA/PHD). [2] In 2012, the GIBS DBA became the first South African doctoral programme in business to receive international accreditation from AMBA. [3] GIBS also offers various executive programmes: short courses, executive-level programmes like the Global Executive Development and General Management Programmes, and company-specific programmes. Extended programmes are longer certificate programmes and include the Social Entrepreneurship Programmes, Leading Women Programmes, and Nexus Leadership Programmes.

History and campus

GIBS was established in January 2000 following a contribution by Sir Donald Gordon, the founder of Liberty Life and Liberty International, and a major investment by the University of Pretoria following discussions that started in 1998. [4] [5] The business school follows on the university's Graduate School of Management's long tradition of MBA tuition. Founded in 1949, [6] the GSM MBA was the first MBA programme to be launched outside of North America. [7] The GSM, as of January 2008, was formally replaced by the Gordon Institute of Business Science. [8]

GIBS is situated in a greenfield campus on Illovo Boulevard, a mixed-use commercial node between the suburbs of Rosebank and Sandton in Johannesburg, [9] with a satellite inner city campus on Pritchard Street. [10] Accommodation is provided on the Illovo campus by the on-campus Illovo Hotel. The Illovo campus is served by the Rosebank Gautrain station, with a nearby Gautrain bus stop and the inner city campus by the Johannesburg Park Station.

Sir Donald Gordon

Sir Donald Gordon (24 June 1930 – 21 November 2019) was a South African businessman and philanthropist. He was educated at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg [11] before doing his articles to be a Chartered Accountant at the firm Kessel Feinstein (now Grant Thornton). [11] He founded the Liberty Life Association of Africa in 1957, [12] out of which he formed Transatlantic Insurance Holdings plc, now Liberty International (a property portfolio of £6.2 billion (2009)) and Liberty Holdings Limited (total assets of R449 billion (2011)). [12] He was a co-founder of the British company Abbey Life. In June 2005, he was awarded a British knighthood in recognition of his services to the arts and business. [12]

Academics

In 2021, the school had 35 permanent faculty members, 29 adjunct faculty members, 11 international faculty members, 8 extraordinary professors, and 1 honorary professor (80% of faculty members hold a doctorate [13] ). Past and present faculty members include Gill Marcus (ninth Governor of the South African Reserve Bank) and Nick Binedell.

Company-specific programmes clients include Standard Bank, Anglo American PLC, ABSA, SABMiller, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the South African National Treasury. The company-specific programmes have been delivered in 22 countries and include certificates in senior management development, wealth management, middle management development as well as its foundation management development. Gautrain is an 80-kilometre (50-mile) higher-speed express commuter rail system in Gauteng, South Africa, which links Johannesburg, Pretoria, Kempton Park and O. R. Tambo International Airport. It takes 15 minutes to travel from Sandton to O. R. Tambo International Airport on the Gautrain and 35 minutes from Pretoria in Tshwane to Park Station in Johannesburg. The Gautrain has 10 stations. Buses, shuttles and midibus services are available to transport passengers to and from all stations excluding the O. R. Tambo International Airport Station.

Illovo is a suburb of Sandton, South Africa. It borders Hyde Park, Sandhurst, Inanda and Melrose. Illovo is sought-after and home to many young professionals and creatives because of its close proximity to Sandton and Johannesburg business centres and many affordable apartment blocks. It is located in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

The campuses of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg contain a number of notable buildings. There are five campuses: East Campus and West Campus are located in Braamfontein on opposite sides of the M1 highway, while the Education Campus and the Medical and Management schools are located in Parktown.

The University of Pretoria Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Information Technology educational programs stretch back to 1908 and consists of the School of Engineering, School for the Built Environment, School of Information Technology and the Graduate School of Technology Management. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Transport in Johannesburg</span>

Johannesburg is a young and sprawling city. As the public transport system is still in its infancy, it is difficult to travel around the city. The city has grown into northern areas, but the main transport system is focused on the southern areas. These transportation systems in the south are in major peril and need of an upgrade. The city of Johannesburg invested a large percentage of its budget in this problem.

Thomas Kgokolo is a South African chartered accountant, businessman, and corporate executive. He was appointed the interim CEO of South African Airways, the national airline company of South Africa, effective 13 April 2021.
