Language

The Blagar people speak the Blagar language, which is spread over the East Pantar district, namely in Batu village (Tuabang, Bikolang and Kolijahe hamlets) and Nule village (Nuhawala and Treweng hamlets), and on Pura Island (Retta village). [2] [3] This language has three dialects, namely the Kolijahe, Pura, and Retta dialects. The Blagar language is used by local residents in various ceremonies such as births, marriages, and deaths, as well as ceremonies of a supplicatory nature, asking for rain, harvest thanksgiving, and others.

At present, there is a serious threat of extinction of the Blagar language, the younger generation prefers to use Indonesian or Alor Malay because they are afraid of being considered uneducated or less prestigious. [4] This is due to the increasingly widespread interaction between ethnic groups in Alor Regency. Therefore, it will be difficult to know for sure the number of speakers of the language and the population of the ethnic group. [2] However, it is estimated that there were around 10,000 Blagar people who mostly spoke the Blagar language in 2014. [1]
