Iridosornis is a genus of Neotropical birds in the tanager family Thraupidae
These birds live in the Andes mostly at high altitudes. Their plumage is mainly blue and all of them have contrasting patches of yellow. [1]
The genus Iridosornis was introduced in 1844 by the French naturalist René Lesson with the golden-crowned tanager as the type species. [2] [3] The name combines the Ancient Greek iris meaning "rainbow" with ornis meaning "bird". [4] A molecular phylogenetic study published in 2014 found that this genus had a sister relationship to the vermilion tanager which is placed in its own monospecific genus Calochaetes. [5]
The genus contains five species: [6]
Image | Scientific name | Common Name | Distribution |
---|---|---|---|
Iridosornis porphyrocephalus | Purplish-mantled tanager | Colombia and Ecuador | |
Iridosornis analis | Yellow-throated tanager | Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru | |
Iridosornis jelskii | Golden-collared tanager | Bolivia and Peru | |
Iridosornis rufivertex | Golden-crowned tanager | Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela | |
Iridosornis reinhardti | Yellow-scarfed tanager | Peru | |
Saltator is a genus of passerine birds in the tanager family Thraupidae that are found in Central and South America. They have thick bills, relatively long tails and strong legs and feet. Before the introduction of molecular genetic methods in the 21st century these species were placed in the cardinal family Cardinalidae.
The brown tanager is a small South American bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of the genus Orchesticus.
The grass-green tanager is a small South America bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of the genus Chlorornis.
Catamenia is a genus of atypical seedeaters. Formerly placed in the Emberizidae, they are now placed in the tanager family Thraupidae.
Phrygilus is a genus of mainly Andean seed-eating tanagers commonly known as sierra finches. Phrygilos means finch in Ancient Greek. Traditionally classified in the bunting and American sparrow family Emberizidae, more recent studies have shown them to belong in the Thraupidae.
Emberizoides is a small genus of finch-like tanagers found in grassy areas in Central and South America.
Embernagra is a genus of South American finch-like birds in the tanager family Thraupidae.
Thlypopsis is a genus of birds in the tanager family Thraupidae.
The chestnut-headed tanager is a species of bird in the tanager family Thraupidae this is found in the Atlantic Forest of southeast Brazil, eastern Paraguay and far northeastern Argentina. It was formerly the only member of the genus Pyrrhocoma but is now placed in Thlypopsis.
The orange-throated tanager is a species of bird in the tanager family Thraupidae that is found very locally in humid forests around the Ecuador-Peru border. As a species it is considered threatened. The orange-throated tanager is the only member of the genus Wetmorethraupis, named after the ornithologist Alexander Wetmore. It is closely related to members of the genus Bangsia.
The yellow cardinal is a species of South American bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of its genus, Gubernatrix. It is very rare and can only be found in South America.
The golden-collared honeycreeper is an uncommon species of Neotropical bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of the genus Iridophanes.
Loxigilla is a genus of passerine birds in the tanager family Thraupidae. The two species are both endemic to the Lesser Antilles.
The yellow-shouldered grassquit is a species of bird in the tanager family Thraupidae that is endemic to Jamaica. It is the only member of the genus Loxipasser. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, and heavily degraded former forest.
Melanospiza is a genus of Neotropical birds in the tanager family Thraupidae.
Melopyrrha is a genus of passerine birds in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is made up of four extant species endemic to the Greater Antilles, along with 1 possibly extinct species from the island of Saint Kitts in the Lesser Antilles.
The golden-naped tanager is a species of bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is found in South America from Colombia to Bolivia. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and heavily degraded former forest.
The black-backed bush tanager, also known as the black-backed bush-finch, is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae. It is the only member in the genus Urothraupis. It is found in Colombia and Ecuador. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
Microspingus is a genus of warbler-like birds in the tanager family Thraupidae. They are found in highland forest in South America.
Ixothraupis is a genus of Neotropical birds in the tanager family Thraupidae.
