Peter Goodfellow (born 1953) [1] is a New Zealand businessman and politician,served as President of the New Zealand National Party from 2009 to 2022. [2]
Goodfellow was a long-time National Party activist. On 2 August 2009,he succeeded Judy Kirk as Party President. [3] In 2009,Goodfellow faced early opposition from within the party,with reports that events instigating the breakup of his marriage had soured his relationship with the party directors. [4] However,he was re-elected by the party's Board of Directors in July 2010. [5] Goodfellow's presidency coincided with National's term in Government under prime ministers John Key and Bill English,as well as the beginning of National's time in Opposition under leaders Simon Bridges,Todd Muller,Judith Collins and Christopher Luxon.
In early August 2021,Goodfellow survived a leadership challenge by former Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives turned National Party board member David Carter. In response,Carter announced his resignation from the National Party's nine-member leadership board. [6] [7] In June 2022,Goodfellow announced he would not seek re-election to the presidency in August 2022 but intended to remain on the board. On announcing his retirement,Goodfellow stated that he had intended to step aside from the role in 2016,but John Key's resignation as prime minister convinced him to remain in the role. [8] [9] [10]
Peter Goodfellow is a director in fishing company Sanford Ltd. [11] He is currently a Board Trustee on the St. Andrew’s Village Trust (Inc). [12]
He is the son of Douglas Goodfellow and grandson of Sir William Goodfellow. [13] The wealth of the Goodfellow family was estimated at $500 million in 2013, [13] largely acquired through investment in the dairy farming industry. [14] He is married to Auckland councillor Desley Simpson. [15]
Christopher Joseph Carter is a former New Zealand Labour Party and independent Member of the New Zealand Parliament. He was a senior Cabinet Minister in the Fifth Labour Government of New Zealand,serving lastly as Minister of Education,Minister Responsible for the Education Review Office and Minister of Ethnic Affairs. He was the Member of Parliament for the Te Atatu electorate,where he was first elected in 1993. He did not win re-election in 1996,but won a new and expanded Te Atatu seat in 1999. In 2010,he was suspended from the Labour Party caucus following a dispute with party leader Phil Goff,shortly afterwards he became an independent MP. He was expelled by the Labour Party for breaching the Party's constitution in bringing the Party in disrepute,on 11 October 2010. In September 2011 Carter resigned from Parliament following his appointment to a United Nations position in Afghanistan where he served for 4 years. In 2015 he was appointed to head UN operations in Rakhine State in Myanmar where he served for 3 years. In 2018 he rejoined the New Zealand Labour Party and stood for election as a Labour Party representative in the 2019 New Zealand local elections. Carter was elected and appointed as Chairperson of the Henderson Massey Local Board with 11,250 votes. He also won election in 2019 as one of the seven elected board members of the Waitemata District Health Board with 14,593 votes. Both positions have three year terms.
Sir David Cunningham Carter is a New Zealand National Party politician who served as the 29th Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017 and as a Cabinet Minister in the Fourth and Fifth National Governments. He represented the Selwyn electorate in the 44th Parliament and the Banks Peninsula electorate in the 45th Parliament. He served as a list MP from 1999 until he retired at the 2020 election.
John McGregor Carter is a New Zealand politician,and member of the National Party. About an hour before the National Party caucus was set to meet,he withdrew from the race and endorsed Christopher Luxon.
