The 2018 Thurrock Council elections will take place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. [1] No party holds overall control, with a minority Conservative administration running the council. [2] Councillors in 16 out of the 20 electoral wards will be up for election. [3] The Conservatives will be defending five seats, the Thurrock Independents will be defending five seats and Labour will be defending six seats. Beyond those councillors seeking re-election, some additional candidates have already announced, but the full lineup may not be known until April 2018. [4]
Thurrock Council is the local council for the borough of Thurrock in Essex, England. Since 1997, Thurrock has been a unitary authority, combining the functions of a non-metropolitan county with that of a non-metropolitan district. The other such authority in Essex is Southend-on-Sea. It is a member of the East of England Local Government Association.
On 26 January 2018, all sitting UKIP councillors resigned from the party and formed a new opposition group called Thurrock Independents. [5]
On 13 March 2018, Basildon UKIP announced that they had taken over responsibility for the 6 East Thurrock wards and are now called UKIP Basildon and Thurrock Branch. [6]
Before the elections, there was a by-election held in Ockendon which resulted in a Conservative gain after a tie and drawing of lots. [7]

Thurrock is a unitary authority in Essex, England. Until 1 April 1998 it was a non-metropolitan district. One third of the council is elected each year, followed by one year without an election. Since the unitary authority was first elected in 1997, the council has consisted of 49 councillors elected from 20 wards.
South Basildon and East Thurrock is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since its 2010 creation by Stephen Metcalfe, a Conservative.
The 2012 North East Lincolnshire Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of North East Lincolnshire Council in England. This was on the same day as other United Kingdom local elections, 2012.
Timür Mark "Tim" Aker is a British politician and a Thurrock Independents Member of the European Parliament for the East of England region. He was elected as a UK Independence Party (UKIP) candidate in 2014. He was head of UKIP's Policy Unit from August 2013 to January 2015, and was UKIP's candidate for the Thurrock constituency in the 2015 general election, coming third in a close 3-way election. Aker joined the Thurrock Independents as a councillor in 2018, leaving UKIP for good later that year.
The elections for Oxford City Council took place on Thursday 22 May 2014. The Labour Party won every available council seat for the third election in a row, winning 74% of the popular vote. The Conservatives saw their vote share rise by 13 percentage points but failed to win any seats.
Elections to Cannock Chase District Council took place on 3 May 2018 on the same day as other local elections in England. A third of the council was up for election, meaning a total of 13 councillors were elected from all but two of the council's wards.
