Alor Gajah is a town and district seat of Alor Gajah District in the Malaysian state of Malacca. It is governed by Alor Gajah Municipal Council (Malay : Majlis Perbandaran Alor Gajah), which was formerly known as Alor Gajah District Council (Malay : Majlis Daerah Alor Gajah) from 1 July 1978 until 1 May 2003. [1]

Etymology

Alor Gajah used to be one of the forest areas believed to be the routes (Malay: alor) for wild elephants (Malay: gajah). [2]

Economy

Alor Gajah is home to Honda Malaysia's car manufacturing plant, [4] which assembling cars for the local market and also selected automotive parts for Honda's overall ASEAN market and also local biscuit producer - Julie's manufacturing plant.

Melaka Aerorail is a proposed monorail line to be constructed in Malacca City. It will be constructed in two phases, 9.5 km for the first one with another at 8.7 km. The cost of construction is expected to be around RM1.8 Billion. If it is successful, it will be the first aerorail network in Malaysia and Asia. The project, however, has been postponed indefinitely.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Pengkalan Balak Beach</span> Beach in Alor Gajah, Malacca, Malaysia

Pengkalan Balak Beach is a beach in the town of Masjid Tanah, to the north of Tanjung Bidara Beach in Alor Gajah District, in the Malaysian state of Malacca. It is one of the important landing sites of the hawksbill turtles in the state. A turtle conservation and information centre was set up by the Department of Fisheries at fishing village Kampung Padang Kemunting to protect the species. The beach features turtle sculptures, which were installed by Alor Gajah Municipal Council on 28 December 2020 with a cost of RM 20,000. Many tourists frequented there for outdoor activities such as picnic, swimming, fishing and camping.
