Islington is a suburb on the western side of Christchurch city.
The suburb is named after the London borough of Islington, perhaps because the borough had a market for cattle, while the Christchurch area had a freezing works opened in 1889. [3]
State Highway 1 and the Main South Line run past the southern side of Islington. [4] The suburb is home to a major electrical substation, which is also home to the main operations centre for the South Island's electrical grid. [5]
Islington covers 1.78 km2 (0.69 sq mi). [1] It had an estimated population of 1,020 as of June 2023, [2] with a population density of 573 people per km2.

Islington had a population of 969 at the 2018 New Zealand census, an increase of 63 people (7.0%) since the 2013 census, and an increase of 159 people (19.6%) since the 2006 census. There were 366 households, comprising 495 males and 474 females, giving a sex ratio of 1.04 males per female. The median age was 37.8 years (compared with 37.4 years nationally), with 165 people (17.0%) aged under 15 years, 201 (20.7%) aged 15 to 29, 480 (49.5%) aged 30 to 64, and 123 (12.7%) aged 65 or older.
Ethnicities were 72.8% European/Pākehā, 16.7% Māori, 6.5% Pasifika, 14.9% Asian, and 2.2% other ethnicities. People may identify with more than one ethnicity.
The percentage of people born overseas was 21.7, compared with 27.1% nationally.
Although some people chose not to answer the census's question about religious affiliation, 50.5% had no religion, 37.2% were Christian, 1.9% had Māori religious beliefs, 1.2% were Hindu, 0.3% were Muslim and 2.2% had other religions.
Of those at least 15 years old, 72 (9.0%) people had a bachelor's or higher degree, and 234 (29.1%) people had no formal qualifications. The median income was $34,400, compared with $31,800 nationally. 69 people (8.6%) earned over $70,000 compared to 17.2% nationally. The employment status of those at least 15 was that 438 (54.5%) people were employed full-time, 102 (12.7%) were part-time, and 33 (4.1%) were unemployed. [6]
Waltham is an inner suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, located approximately 2 kilometres south-east of the city centre. State Highway 76, part of Christchurch's ring road system, and known there as Brougham Street, runs through the suburb, as does the Lyttelton Line rail corridor.

Avondale is a suburb of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. It is located 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) northeast of the city center, and is close to the Avon River / Ōtākaro, four kilometres to the northwest of its estuary. The suburb is centred on Avondale Road and so named due to its proximity to the Avon River. It has a good sized park on Mervyn Drive called Avondale Park. This park has a kids playground, a tennis court, basketball court, and a football field in winter. There is ample vacant red zone land in Avondale for activities such as leisure and dog walking.
Mount Pleasant (Tauhinukorokio) is a coastal suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand. The suburb is located on the northern flank of the mountain Tauhinukorokio/Mount Pleasant in the Port Hills. It takes its name from the English version of the mountain's name.
Edgeware is a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, to the north of the central city. It is centred on a cluster of some 20 shops that make up Edgeware Village on Edgeware Road near Colombo Street's northern end. The boundaries of the suburb are debated. Google maps includes St Albans park as being within the boundaries of Edgeware, while excluding the Edgeware shops at the western end of Edgeware Road.
Phillipstown is a small inner suburb of the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. It lies south-east of the city centre being bordered by Cashel Street to the north, Aldwins Road to the east, Ferry Road to the south, and Fitzgerald Avenue to the west.

North New Brighton is a suburb on the northern side of Christchurch city. It was originally known as North Beach and was readily accessible from Christchurch city by tram. It was renamed North New Brighton in 1953.
