Mount Zion Methodist Church is located on Primrose Avenue (NY 139) in Somers, New York, United States. It is a white clapboard-sided church built near the end of the 18th century, and heavily renovated around 1860. A century later, in 1970, it was severely vandalized.
It is the oldest church in Somers, and important to the establishment of Methodism in New York as the dominant church in northern Westchester County for much of its history. [1] The congregation has been defunct since the late 19th century, and the building and its cemetery are now town property. In 1990 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The church building is located on a small 1.4-acre (5,700 m2) lot along the east side of Primrose just south of Reis Park. It is on a small rise, elevating it above the roadway which slopes south at that point, with the cemetery on three sides. All lot lines save the front are marked by stone walls. [1]
It is a two-and-half-story post-and-beam frame gabled church 30 by 40 feet (9.1 by 12.2 m) on a slightly exposed fieldstone foundation. There is no decoration or steeple, but a small brick chimney rises from the north end. The roof is shingled in asphalt and has an overhanging eave, complemented by plain frieze and cornerboard. [1]
All three bays on both stories on the east and west have 12-over-12 double-hung sash windows. There are only two windows on the north and south sides of either story, and one small one in the gable ends. The main entrance, in the middle of the south (front) facade, is a pair of doors with a shouldered architrave surround. [1]
From the entrance a narrow vestibule leads inside to a central hall where two small stairways on either side go up to the gallery, supported by four plain columns chamfered above the gallery level. Outside of the vestibule, the plain pine flooring is unpainted. The walls are wainscoted with vertical beaded tongue-and-groove boards on the first story, and plain white plaster above. [1]
There are three sets of benches on the first story, all facing the pulpit except for those on either side of it, which face the center. The pulpit itself is a raised wooden platform supporting a lectern flanked by pedestals. A mahogany and horsehair settee is against the wall. A balustered wooden communion railing along the front also curves to slightly cover the sides. Cast iron heating stoves with detached pipes are located near the south end. [1]
The gallery is floored in overlapping wide pine. Its three rows of benches all face the pulpit. A four-lamped kerosene-fueled chandelier hangs from the ceiling.
The cemetery's graves are all closely spaced and well-maintained. They date from 1793 to 1959, reflecting design trends of their eras. The oldest 11 graves, up to 1816, are of brown sandstone and shaped like arches with flanking finials. There is little funerary art save an urn on one. [1]
Marble headstones account for the largest group, from 1812 to 1908. These can be divided into three groups. The most numerous, from 1812–1929, are plain stones with block lettering. A small group from 1819–1863 are more neoclassical, with urn and willow motifs including not only urns as well as italic lettering. A small group from the Civil War period are the most ornate in the cemetery, adding books and chain-and-tassel designs to the earlier flourishes. One grave of a Union Army soldier includes a cannon. Granite takes over for the majority of later graves. Most are more massive, taking the form of pyramids and pedestals. There are three family plots within the cemetery, one of which is only set off by its original fence posts. [1]
Methodism had arrived in the American colonies before the Revolution, and continued developing through it and afterwards. Prior to the establishment of churches, the denomination's preachers traveled in "circuits", groups of towns where they had gained followings. These were eventually adopted by the church as its formal organizational structure. [1]
In 1787, the New Rochelle Circuit was formally established by Freeborn Garrettson at the direction of Bishop Francis Asbury. It was the third Methodist Society in the state and the first in Westchester. When the Somers church was built in 1794, it was the first church of any kind in that town and the fifth of seven on the New Rochelle Circuit. [1]
All of these were intentionally built as austere as possible. This saved money and was in keeping with the Methodist philosophy as it broke from England. Asbury had declared that all Methodist houses of worship were to be "plain and decent, but no more expensive than absolutely unavoidable." Many were simple white frame buildings like Mt. Zion, resembling houses or barns more than churches, with only their large windows suggesting that use and the influence of the Federal style. Of the original seven, only Mt. Zion and the Bethel Chapel in what is now Croton retain most of their original form and finish. [1]
As Methodism grew in popularity, so did the churches. The circuits continued to be redefined. Mt. Zion became part of the Croton Circuit in 1803, and then the Cortlandt Circuit six years later. In this position it was the central church for the surrounding communities. [1] One of its mission churches, the West Somers Methodist Episcopal Church, has itself had its former building listed on the National Register.
This lasted until the 1840s, when the churches in Shrub Oak and Peekskill to the west received their own circuit. In 1860 the church received a major rehabilitation, adding some decoration in the Greek Revival, reducing the size of the pulpit and adding the gallery. [1]
Mt. Zion's regional influence continued on churches in the rural communities to the north and east until 1861, when the circuit was effectively disestablished. At that time the Lewisboro church became separate, and Mt. Zion's influence was purely local. [1]
Because of this, and the growth in communities encouraged by the New York and Harlem Railroad (today the Metro-North Harlem Line), the congregation began to dwindle. It enjoyed a renaissance in the 1880s under several committed new pastors, with a hundred new members. The construction of the New York City water supply system in northern Westchester ended that resurgence, as the land acquired for its reservoirs displaced many of the local farmers who had made up the bulk of the congregation since its earliest days. The last regular services were held by The Rev. N.S. Tuthill in 1897. [1]
The church building went under the care of the Methodist congregation in nearby Katonah, which maintained it for a while in the early 20th century and held anniversary services there once a year. Those ceased after 1930, and the building began to decay. In 1970 it was severely vandalized, with its original mahogany pump organ destroyed as well as the original balusters around the pulpit. The original windowpanes were smashed at that time as well. [1]
Three years later, in 1973, the town bought it from the Methodists to prevent further incidents and preserve it as a historic site. It is today under the care of the Somers Historical Society. [2] In the late 1980s its site was further buffered when a developer donated the adjacent 16 acres (6.5 ha), former farmland which had been zoned for single-family residential use, to the town as open space in return for clustering houses in another development. [1]
The Methodist Episcopal Church, South was the American Methodist denomination resulting from the 19th-century split over the issue of slavery in the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC). Disagreement on this issue had been increasing in strength for decades between churches of the Northern and Southern United States; in 1845 it resulted in a schism at the General Conference of the MEC held in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow (Dutch: Oude Nederlandse Kerk van Sleepy Hollow), listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Dutch Reformed Church (Sleepy Hollow), is a 17th-century stone church located on Albany Post Road (U.S. Route 9) in Sleepy Hollow, New York, United States. It and its three-acre (1.2 ha) churchyard feature prominently in Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". The churchyard is often confused with the contiguous but separate Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
Wesley's Chapel is a Methodist church situated in the St Luke's area in the south of the London Borough of Islington. Opened in 1778, it was built under the direction of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. The site is a place of worship and visitor attraction, incorporating the Museum of Methodism in its crypt and John Wesley's House next to the chapel. The chapel has been called "The Mother Church of World Methodism".
The Foster Memorial AME Zion Church is located on Wildey Street in Tarrytown, New York, United States. Formed in 1860, it is the oldest black church in Westchester County and possibly one of the oldest in the state. During the Civil War it was a stop on the Underground Railroad. One of the church's founders was herself an escaped slave, as were many parishioners. They helped slaves either continue to Canada or settle in Tarrytown if they wished. The church has played a major role in Tarrytown's African-American community ever since.
Hyde Park Dutch Reformed Church is located on US 9 in the center of Hyde Park, New York, United States, just north of the post office and the junction with Market Street at the center of town. It is a complex of several buildings on a 2-acre (0.81 ha) lot.
The Asbury United Methodist Church is a historic Methodist church on NH 63 in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. It has been termed the "mother church of Methodism in New Hampshire", and is home to the state's oldest continuously running Methodist congregation, organized in 1795. The building, constructed in 1844, is a prominent local example of Greek Revival architecture, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Asbury United Methodist Church and Bethel Chapel and Cemetery is a national historic district containing a Methodist church, chapel, and cemetery at 19 Old Post Road in Croton-on-Hudson, Westchester County, New York. The church was built in 1883 and is a rectangular brick building with a multi-colored slate-covered gable roof in the Gothic Revival style. It features large Gothic-arched stained and leaded glass windows added in 1891 and a square, engaged, two stage tower. The chapel was built about 1790 and is a 1+1⁄2-story, two-by-two-bay, clapboard-sided building on a granite foundation. Francis Asbury (1745–1816) is known to have visited the chapel on September 20, 1795. The cemetery is in two sections and contains about 5,000 graves; the date of the earliest burial is 1801. It includes the grave of noted playwright and author Lorraine Hansberry (1930–1965).
Commack United Methodist Church and Cemetery is a historic Methodist church meeting house and cemetery located at 486 Townline Road in Commack, Suffolk County, New York. It was built in 1789 and is a relatively large, two story, two bay shingled building with a broad, overhanging gable roof. It is the oldest Methodist church in New York State in continuous operation. The surrounding burial ground has graves dating to the 18th century.
Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church and Mount Zion Cemetery is a historic church and cemetery located at 172 Garwin Road in Woolwich Township, New Jersey, United States. The church was a stop on the Greenwich Line of the Underground Railroad through South Jersey operated by Harriet Tubman for 10 years. The church provided supplies and shelter to runaway slaves on their way to Canada from the South. The church and cemetery were part of the early 19th-century free negro settlement sponsored by Quakers known as Small Gloucester.
The Mount Tabor Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic church building located along State Route 245 near West Liberty in Salem Township, Champaign County, Ohio, United States. Built in 1881 in the Gothic Revival style of architecture, it served a congregation formed in the 1810s. This congregation of the Methodist Episcopal Church worshipped in at least three different buildings before its closure.
Bethesda Methodist Chapel is a disused Methodist chapel, in Hanley, Staffordshire, England. One of the largest Nonconformist chapels outside London, the building has been known as the "Cathedral of the Potteries", being "one of the largest and most ornate Methodist town chapels surviving in the UK".
Mount Zion Cemetery/Female Union Band Society Cemetery is a historic cemetery located at 27th Street NW and Mill Road NW in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., in the United States. The cemetery is actually two adjoining burial grounds: the Mount Zion Cemetery and Female Union Band Society Cemetery. Together these cemeteries occupy approximately three and a half acres of land. The property fronts Mill Road NW and overlooks Rock Creek Park to the rear. Mount Zion Cemetery, positioned to the East, is approximately 67,300 square feet in area; the Female Union Band Cemetery, situated to the West, contains approximately 66,500 square feet. Mount Zion Cemetery, founded in 1808 as The Old Methodist Burial Ground, was leased property later sold to Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Although the cemetery buried both White and Black persons since its inception, it served an almost exclusively African American population after 1849. In 1842, the Female Union Band Society purchased the western lot to establish a secular burying ground for African Americans. Both cemeteries were abandoned by 1950.
Monmouth Methodist Church is located in Monmouth, south east Wales. It is set well back from St James Street between buildings. Designed by George Vaughan Maddox and built in 1837, it retains its original galleries, organ loft and sophisticated pulpit.
The history of Methodism in the United States dates back to the mid-18th century with the ministries of early Methodist preachers such as Laurence Coughlan and Robert Strawbridge. Following the American Revolution most of the Anglican clergy who had been in America came back to England. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, sent Thomas Coke to America where he and Francis Asbury founded the Methodist Episcopal Church, which was to later establish itself as the largest denomination in America during the 19th century.
The former West Somers Methodist Episcopal Church, also known as Tomahawk Chapel, is located on Tomahawk Street in the town of Somers, New York, United States. It is a small wooden building in the Greek Revival architectural style built in the 1830s. Also on its lot is the cemetery where many of the early members were buried. In 2011 the church, cemetery and the stone wall that surrounds them were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Easton Methodist Church is a Methodist Church in Easton, on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, which was built in 1906–07. The church, along with its former manse and boundary walls, has been a Grade II* Listed since May 1993. Its church hall was formerly a Wesleyan school, dated 1878 on the porch. The school, with the boundary wall, was designated Grade II in May 1993. The church remains active to date, as part of the Portland Methodist Circuit – which involves two churches; Underhill Methodist Church and Easton Methodist Church.
There are numerous nationally and locally designated historic sites and attractions in Westchester County. These include architecturally significant manors and estates, churches, cemeteries, farmhouses, African-American heritage sites, and underground railroad depots and waystations. There are sites from pre-Revolutionary and Revolutionary times, as well as battlegrounds. Westchester County also played an important role in the development of the modern suburb, and there are many associated heritage sites and museums.
Hinde Street Methodist Church in Hinde Street, Marylebone, London, is Grade II listed with Historic England. It was built 1807-10 and rebuilt in the 1880s.
Capel Heol Dŵr was a Calvinistic Methodist chapel in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The building dates from 1831 and is located at Water St, Carmarthen. It was designated as a Grade II listed building on 19 May 1981.
