Mpowele Swathe is a South African politician,a former Member of Parliament with the Democratic Alliance,and the former Shadow Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.
Swathe was born in Limpopo,became part of Black Consciousness Movement in the late 1980s,and joined the United Democratic Front in 1990 and the African National Congress. He later qualified as a teacher in 1996. [1]
Swathe retired from politics in 1996 before joining the Democratic Party in 2000,getting elected to parliament in the 2004 South African general election. [1] In March 2014 it became known that Swathe had joined the United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP),and his name appeared on both parties' lists for the 2014 general election. [2] UCDP did not win any seats.

The United Christian Democratic Party is a minor political party in South Africa. It was founded by Lucas Mangope,leader of the Bophuthatswana bantustan in 1997,as a successor to the Tswana National Party,and led by him for the first fifteen years of its existence. Mavis Matladi was elected as its leader on 29 January 2011 after the expulsion of Mangope. Matladi died in December 2011. Isaac Sipho Mfundisi was elected president on Saturday,7 January 2012.

The Progressive Party was a liberal party in South Africa which,during the era of apartheid,was considered the left wing of the all-white parliament. The party represented the legal opposition to apartheid within South Africa's white minority. It opposed the ruling National Party's racial policies,and championed the rule of law. For 13 years,its only member of parliament was Helen Suzman. It was later renamed the Progressive Reform Party in 1975,and then Progressive Federal Party in 1977. The modern Democratic Alliance considers the party to be its earliest predecessor.
Roelof Petrus MeyerGCOB is a South African politician and businessman. A Member of Parliament between 1979 and 1997,he was the chief negotiator for the National Party government during the negotiations to end apartheid. He later co-founded the United Democratic Movement.
The 1994 Bophuthatswana crisis was a major political crisis which began after Lucas Mangope,the president of Bophuthatswana,a nominally independent South African bantustan created under apartheid,attempted to crush widespread labour unrest and popular demonstrations demanding the incorporation of the territory into South Africa pending non-racial elections later that year. Violent protests immediately broke out following President Mangope's announcement on 7 March that Bophuthatswana would boycott the South African general elections. This was escalated by the arrival of right-wing Afrikaner militias seeking to preserve the Mangope government. The predominantly black Bophuthatswana Defence Force and police refused to cooperate with the white extremists and mutinied,then forced the Afrikaner militias to leave Bophuthatswana.
The Congress of the People (COPE) is a South African political party formed in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The party was founded by former ANC members Mosiuoa Lekota,Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George to contest the 2009 general election. The party was announced following a national convention held in Sandton on 1 November 2008,and was founded at a congress held in Bloemfontein on 16 December 2008. The name echoes the 1955 Congress of the People at which the Freedom Charter was adopted by the ANC and other parties,a name strongly contested by the ANC in a legal move dismissed by the Pretoria High Court.
Although the Democratic Alliance of South Africa in its present form is fairly new,its roots can be traced far back in South African political history,through a complex sequence of splits and mergers.
General elections were held in South Africa on 7 May 2014,to elect a new National Assembly and new provincial legislatures in each province. It was the fifth election held in South Africa under conditions of universal adult suffrage since the end of the apartheid era in 1994,and also the first held since the death of Nelson Mandela. It was also the first time that South African expatriates were allowed to vote in a South African national election.

Mohammed Haniff Hoosen is a South African politician who has served as a Member for the National Assembly for the Independent Democrats (ID) (2007–2014) and currently for the Democratic Alliance (DA) (2014–present). Within the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet,he serves as the DA's spokesperson on the Standing Committee on the Auditor-General. He was the Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2019 to 2020. Hoosen was also the Shadow Minister of Home Affairs from 2014 to 2019.
Gerhardus Willem Koornhof is a South African politician and economist who serves as the Parliamentary Counsellor to President Cyril Ramaphosa. When Ramaphosa served as deputy president,Koornhof was his parliament counsellor. An MP since 1994,Koornhof currently represents the African National Congress,though he previously represented United Democratic Movement between 1999 and 2003 and the National Party/New National Party before that.
Mogoboya Nelson Ramodike was a South African politician who served as Chief Minister of Lebowa,an apartheid-era bantustan,from 21 October 1987 to 26 April 1994. He subsequently represented the United Democratic Movement in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2003.
Kgomotso Paul Harry Ditshetelo was a South African politician who represented the United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009. He was also the deputy president of the UCDP from 1998 to 2011. During apartheid,he was a politician and civil servant in Bophuthatswana.
Isaac Sipho Mfundisi is a South African politician who represented the United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009 and from 2012 to 2014. He is also a former president of the UCDP.
