The railway system in Ghana has historically been confined to the plains south of the barrier range of mountains north of the city of Kumasi. However, the 1,067 mm narrow gauge railway, totalling 1,300 kilometres, is undergoing major rehabilitation and inroads to the interior are now being made. In Ghana, most of the lines are single tracked, and in 1997 it was estimated that 32 kilometres were double tracked.

The N1 or National Highway 1 is a national highway in Ghana that begins at the border with Ivory Coast at Elubo and runs through Sekondi-Takoradi, Cape Coast, Winneba, Accra and Tema to the border with Togo at Aflao. It is the main highway along the coast of the country, with a total distance of 540 kilometers. The route runs through the Western, Central, Greater Accra and Volta regions of Ghana.

The Ministry of Railway Development of Ghana was created with the core responsible to ensure and increase infrastructural growth and service delivery in Ghana's transport sector to help ease pressure on the other means of transport. The ministry is also tasked with the responsibility of ensuring quality, effective and a more secure means of traveling and transporting goods and services within Ghana and the neighboring countries.

The Western Railway Line is a narrow gauge single track railway line from Takoradi Port to Kumasi, with branch lines at Kojokrom, which leads to Sekondi and another at Dunkwa, which leads to Awaso.
