The eighth season of the Philippine amateur singing competition Tawag ng Tanghalan , titled as Tawag ng Tanghalan: The School Showdown, was an amateur singing competition that currently airs as a segment of the noontime show It's Showtime . The season ran from April 22, 2024 to January 18, 2025. ^[1]

This is the first and only season to have a subtitle in the name.

Carmelle Collado from King Thomas Learning Academy, Inc. was crowned the season's grand champion, becoming the second winner to advance to the finals and win the season via the Resbak rounds after Kim Hewitt from the second kids season. Isay Olarte from City College of Calapan was proclaimed the runner-up, and Arvery Love Lagoring from Claret School of Lamitan came in third.

Development

Initially promoted as Tawag ng Tanghalan: Ikawalong Taon, little information about this season was released until the finale of the second season of Tawag ng Tanghalan Kids , which was held two days before the season began, when the hosts teased about the new season.

Auditions

Auditions for The School Showdown were held starting February 2024. Contestants must be at least 14 years old and enrolled in any school or university in the Philippines.

Production

The School Showdown premiered on April 22, 2024, just two days after the finale of Kids 2. This is the second main season and the fourth and final overall season to air on GTV after Duets, Year 7, and Kids 2 until December 31, 2024, the second season to air on GMA Network after Kids 2 following the show's debut on the network last April 6, 2024, and the first season to be aired on ALLTV last June 17, 2024. ^{[2] [3]}

Hosts and judges

Vhong Navarro, Vice Ganda, Amy Perez, Kim Chiu, Karylle, Ogie Alcasid, Anne Curtis, Jhong Hilario and Darren Espanto reprised their hosting roles for this season. Michelle Dee, Barbie Forteza, Bela Padilla, MC Muah Calaquian, Lassy Marquez, Negi, Divine Tetay, Petite and Jackie Gonzaga also served as guest co-hosts in the absence of the main hosts.

Meanwhile, Ryan Bang, Teddy Corpuz and Jugs Jugueta reprised their roles as gongmasters for the season. Ion Perez debuted as the newest gongmaster for this season.

This season marked the return of Klarisse de Guzman, Bituin Escalante, Kean Cipriano, Mark Bautista, Jolina Magdangal, Jona Viray, Kyla, Yeng Constantino, Karylle, Darren Espanto, and alternating head judges or punong hurados Louie Ocampo, Gary Valenciano, Erik Santos, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Nyoy Volante, Jed Madela, Marco Sison, Dingdong Avanzado, Nonoy Zuñiga, and Ogie Alcasid to the judging panel after a season break during the second Kids season. Meanwhile, guest judges were also introduced: Martin Nievera became a guest judge on September 18 and 21, 2024, Teddy Corpuz on November 19, 2024, and Sofronio Vasquez on the live finale on January 18, 2025.

Format

Tawag ng Tanghalan: The School Showdown features student contestants aged 14 and above and are from different universities in the Philippines, representing the universities they are currently enrolled in. Similar to the rivalry between Ateneo and La Salle, the season will feature battles between student contenders from different universities competing to become the season's grand champion.

The season's format, similarly structured from the second kids season, is divided into four phases of "examinations":

• Phase I: Entrance Examinations — equivalent to the Daily Rounds, two student contenders from two different universities will battle in a head-to-head challenge for a slot in the weekly finals.
• Phase II: Preliminary Examinations — equivalent to the Weekly Finals, those who won during the daily rounds will compete for a slot in the semi-finals (or monthly finals) that will be held every Saturday.
• Phase III: Middle-term (Mid-term) Examinations — equivalent to the Semi-Finals, those who won during the weekly finals will compete for two slots at stake per month in the Grand Finals (or the Huling Tapatan) after (five in the first two, fourth, sixth, and eighth and four in the third, fifth, and seventh) weekly finals.
• Phase IV: Final Examinations — equivalent to the Grand Finals or Huling Tapatan, those who won during the semi-finals and Resbakbakan will battle it out one last time to become the season's grand champion.

Still, the criteria for judging remains the same: 50% for voice quality (includes intonation, enunciation, voice projection and technique); and the other 50% for the overall performance (includes timing, mastery of lyrics, stage presence and audience impact).

Prizes

The student contender with the higher score during the daily rounds will receive ₱10,000 while the losing student contender will receive ₱5,000. The weekly finalist that will advance to the semi-finals will receive an additional ₱25,000 while the other weekly finalists will receive ₱5,000. The semi-finalist that advances to the grand finals will receive an additional ₱30,000, while the losing semi-finalists will receive an additional ₱10,000 for those who were eliminated in the first round, and ₱15,000 for those who were eliminated in the second round (first for the third and seventh midterm rounds). The resbaker that advances to the grand finals receives an additional ₱30,000, while an additional ₱20,000 will be given to the resbakers that were eliminated in the Final Resbakbakan round while an additional ₱10,000 will be given to those who do not proceed to the Final Resbakbakan round. Lastly, grand finalists who are eliminated in the daily rounds of the finale week will receive an additional ₱15,000.

Phase I: Entrance Examinations

The first phase, dubbed as the Entrance Examinations, is equivalent to the Daily Rounds. Two student contenders from two different universities will battle in a head-to-head challenge for a slot in the weekly finals.

Phase III: Midterm Examinations

The third phase, dubbed as the Midterm Examinations, is equivalent to the Semi-Finals. Those who won during the weekly finals will compete for two slots at stake each month in the grand finals. This phase is held every last Saturday of the month.

For this round, five judges will sit on the panel, consisting of the head judge or punong hurado, along with four regular judges. There will be two rounds: for the first round, each contender must perform their own rendition or version of a song (dubbed as a "re-imagined version"); the top three highest scorers will advance to the second round where the top three will perform a power ballad version of a song. The two contenders with the highest average score in the second round will advance to the fourth and final phase.

This round also marked the return of the TNT Band, who was last seen on Year 3, and the return of the original number of judges serving in the panel since Year 7.

Resbakbakan

The Resbakbakan, or wildcard round, featured returning student contenders who were eliminated in the Preliminary and Midterm Rounds and are given one more chance to re-enter the competition as an ultimate resbaker. This round was held from January 6 to 11, 2025. For this round, four judges will sit on the panel, consisting of the head judge or punong hurado along with three regular judges.

Fifteen (15) resbakers (composed of nine weekly finalists and six semifinalists) were divided into five groups of three and will perform their respective redemption songs. The Resbaker with the highest score on each day will advance to the Ultimate Resbakbakan on Saturday, where three grand finalists will be named.

The Top 3 resbakers that advance to the grand finals will receive an additional ₱30,000 while a consolation prize of ₱10,000 will be given to the resbakers who did not advance to the Ultimate Resbakbakan round, while ₱20,000 will be given to the resbakers that were eliminated in the Ultimate Resbakbakan round.

Grand Final details

Top 20 (January 13 to 17, 2025)

The twenty grand finalists were initially divided into two teams — black and white — with 10 members each. Two members from each team will be randomly selected: the first chosen by the hosts and the second by the host’s chosen member. As an added twist, each selected member must decide whether to "Play" or "Pass" (Kanta o Pasa) — playing means they will perform that day, while passing transfers their turn to another teammate, testing their strategic thinking both individually and collectively.

The first selected member from each team will perform first in the Final Face-Off, followed by the second. In each face-off round, the contender with the highest score advances to the final round on Saturday, while the other is eliminated. Losing team members from the daily rounds will receive an additional ₱15,000. Additionally, the team with the most remaining members after the daily rounds will earn an extra ₱50,000, to be shared among its members.

With six grand finalists at the end of the week, the White Team had the most. In contrast, Black Team had four.

Live Finale (January 18, 2025)

The Ang Huling Tapatan live finale took place on January 18, 2025. The ten grand finalists who advanced from the daily rounds competed one last time to determine who won the entire competition.

Sofronio Vasquez made a brief appearance on the episode that day on January 17, 2025, one day prior to the live finale, and revealed that he would be joining the judging panel as a guest judge in the live finale. Vasquez had previously made an appearance on the show on January 6, 2025, as a tribute to his homecoming after winning the 26th season of The Voice U.S. ^[4]

With seventeen judges, including the head judge, this season has more judges than any other in a live season finale, surpassing the fifteen of Season 3 and the fourteen of seasons two and seven.

The live finale opened with a performance by the grand finalists along with Vasquez, singing "I Believe I Can Fly", "When You Believe", and "I Believe".
