The Aboriginal Shire of Mapoon is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Australia. [2] It is on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula on the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Most local government areas are a single contiguous area (possibly including islands). However, Aboriginal Shires are often defined as a number of disjoint areas each containing an Indigenous community. In the case of the Aboriginal Shire of Mapoon, there are three areas all within the locality of Mapoon (which is otherwise within the Shire of Cook), two to the north and south of the Wenlock River's mouth at the Gulf of Carpentaria and a third further up river. Cape York Peninsula is a peninsula located in Far North Queensland, Australia. It is the largest wilderness in northern Australia. The land is mostly flat and about half of the area is used for grazing cattle. The relatively undisturbed eucalyptus-wooded savannahs, tropical rainforests and other types of habitat are now recognised and preserved for their global environmental significance. Although much of the peninsula remains pristine, with a diverse repertoire of endemic flora and fauna, some of its wildlife may be threatened by industry and overgrazing as well as introduced species and weeds.
